Man 24 seeking Landcruiser

If your jumping from a car to a 4x4 your going to get hammered by insurance , the mrs who had been driving for more decades than i dare mention without a claim was horrified when she was quoted similar but it halved after a couple of years as did mine .
 
My brother had a 120 and comparing it to the 80 it definitely felt lighter duty plus it was also going rotten on the sills after 10 years.
Plus side was the 6 speed manual box. (I wish the 80 had a 6th lol)

100 series at the moment seems the Best Buy if you can find a decent one.
80 prices seem to be going into orbit.

And there lies the problem Mart, demand and supply, or in its real identification, fear and greed.

Whilst the 80 prices seem to be heading skywards I'm not sure all these prices are being achieved. Originality is the key to an 80 having value and there are so few that are in that state.

+1 for dispelling the myth that the 90 series is light duty.. look at their running gear and physical size beside other 'light duty' 4x4s and you'll see the difference (see Terrano, Trooper, Shogun et al... the 95 is a big, strong machine)

Longevity of the engine is not a problem, as others have said, it's the rust.. mine was built in 2002, and has been to the moon and halfway back again, without any mechanical breakdown bar a ball joint failure (its had a few bits replaced, but nothing else that ever stopped it driving) I had to sink a good chunk of wedge into rust repairs on the rear chassis last year.. and I know I'll be chasing little bits of body rust for a time to come..

I've driven 120s, and while comfortable, have less soul than a 90, while having the same rust issues, possibly sooner than the 90 too. I love the idea of a lazy 4.2 in-line 6 purring along, but as things stand, they are unaffordable in more ways than one for me.

The big plus for the 120 is that there are a lot more of them around. So I would think more choice. And MrT has a full set of spares, should you need anything.

And it's a d4d with some good numbers on.

I think you should look at one or two, specially if you are thinking 95/D4d
 
Having driven both a 120 KZJ120 and 90 VZJ95 (both A343F 4-sp auto trannies, even the 120) I can safely say the 120 feels much more modern - the door handles etc and the interior. The 90 seems more rugged though and rust seems more of an issue here for the 120 vs 90. My mate has rust round his back door seal, my car has none that I know of.

If my mate with the 120 offered to swap with my 90 I would probably do so, but I also love my 90 and I'd have to work out a solution involving selling my wife and/or son so I could keep both.

Hi All,

See attached pictures of the not so shiny side of the 95 I am looking at. D4D engine, 2002.

One thing I am seeing alot of talk around is pack of modification options to them (as mentioned above) things like roof racks etc? Is this really such an issue. I have had a look round in a couple of the more mainstream places and found a couple of bits but not sure if there are better places to look.

I am quite satisfied from what’s been said there will be no shortage of parts for these anytime soon. Please correct me if that is the wrong presumption!

Accessory wise if you can find it on google images while searching "alibaba prado 90 offroad" then somebody else sells it at 4 times the price .
 
Underside looks similar condition to my 1999 just lots of dirt and some surface rust... :thumbup:
 
That does look clean, just make sure you look behind the road dirt on the chassis, especially above and just behind the rear axle, that's where they start to go. If it is good, budget for a proper underbody treatment before shiny accessories. Then you can modify and enjoy with peace of mind. These are great trucks that bridge the gap between farmlike simplicity and modern comforts pretty well
 
Think it’s worth the road trip on Sunday then, I will let you all know how I get on.

Any suggestions for under chassis treatments if it’s a goer? What sort of money are we looking at. Is waxoyl as bad as people say?

There is a link on this site (search for the thread below) for under body treatments. Lots of opinions, brands and recommendations Including approximate costs. Suggest you have a review and ponder options, it might come down to your budget.

Rustproofing, updating methods and products​

 
Hi All,

The search continues but I am going to view a 2005 120 tonight which seems promising.

The one I am viewing tonight has a few mods (nothing drastic - snorkel, belly plates, side steps). Spoke to Adrian Flux today to enquire about insurance on it and they are coming in at £860 with all mods declared, 5000 miles a year. This seems expensive to me for a second motor!

Any pointers on where to look, who to speak to? Age is obviously always a big factor with insurance but there is nothing I can do about that!
