MOT rules

Good morning

I was wandering if anyone is a expert on MOT rules.

Our car is in France. We want to return our beloved to the UK. We need MOT done. We don't have any tax or insurance currently on the car. We are planning to cross via Dover.

Am I correct to say that it would be fine if we have proof of MOT appointment within the next 2 days?

The cars windscreen is cracked and need to be replaced too...

Any suggestions?

Hi Karel,
I am far from being an expert, but I would think that if you were stopped by the Police, a kindly officer might look on an appointment for an MOT favourably, but I would say not having insurance is a definite no no.

You can drive a car without an MOT to and from a testing station but two days may be stretching it a bit.
Tax and insurance though is a very different, you must have both of these. If your car is on a foreign plate i.e. French,
it is unlikely to come up on the ANPR computers in the police cars however if they decide to do a stop check you could
be in for all manner of grief.
Your best bet is to get the UK leg of your journey done on a trailer.
The trouble is that you will not get Tax without an MOT certificate. If you are insured you will possibly get away with the tax and MOT issue
if you can prove the vehicle is booked in.
Over here the police issue a section 165 which means they will take your car off you if it is not insured and you would have to pay =A3130 to get it back.
To get it back though you would need to show proof of insurance and if that takes a few days you will also have to pay =A320 a day storage fees.
Where do you have to get the vehicle to, from Dover? Can you spend enough time in Dover to MOT the car and sort all the other paperwork you need?
Sorry to sound such a doom merchant but it is best to be aware.

Hi
I have done this before a couple of years ago, and passport control in
Dover stopped us when they realised that we had no tax disc.
We explained that the car has been abroad for over a year and he asked
for insurance. Fortunately we bought cover a couple of days before and he
let us pass.

Also, not an expert but the two cents I wanted to add is that insurance spot
checks are becoming more regular these days. There is a national database of
insured vehicles and if your car does not show up on the list when
photographed by an automated spot check camera, your car will be impounded
at the roadside. You will get a fine for the lack of insurance, a bill for
transport to an impound lot and a charge for storage while your proof of
insurance is obtained. It's no fun.

Yes as a former copper ANPR will catch u with no insurance and u need generally news an MOT to get insurance but don't need tax (u need
insurance to get the tax). Prebooked MOT covers u for the MOT but
that's non endorseable anyway (=C2=A330 fine). Some insurers though will
insure onnthe basis of a prebooked Mot. U will need insurance as they can impound and destroy now.

I got stopped by the police with the MOT having expired 10 days previously - everything else in order, just a total oversight having only owned the car for a couple of months.

The kindly officer kindly gave me a =A360 fine...

No such thing in this country anymore my friend - there's scumbags driving around deliberately flouting the law with unroadworthy vehicles & no insurance but its easier to catch the little guys who have goofed slightly. Dropped my opinion of plod by several notches...

Good luck getting across the water Karel - but get all your papers in order first...

Cheers
Gav

Hi Gav,
I did encounter a kindly pair once, I was stopped for speeding on my Honda VFR, and they took me into their car and showed me the video.
I had been doing over 110 mph (in a 50 limit), but because they said I had been riding safely, they followed me for long enough to bring my avererage below 100 mph, over which would have meant an instant ban. I thought that was very nice of them, but I still had a =A360 fine.

Karel,
You can buy UK insurance prior to getting an MOT even for a vehicle that does not have continuity of insurance in the UK. Don't risk it.
