newbie lc 80 owner

pajero turned LC owner here - well - as of tomorrow if it all goes well.

Im buying this (e bay link removed cos im a noob ) e bay item number 130664228742

hopefully for a bit under the asking price.

have read all the faq's about what to look for - leaks mostly, and a quick check of the diff oil in the front axle (24mm socket)? anything else?

Having been really impressed by jap (old) build quality - sadly not the new stuff (had a 06 plate nissan navara that fell apart around my ears). The paj was lovely - but swb was too small, and it needed loads of welding for its latest mot (boat launcher I guess).

well - hopefully be active here - Im quite technical, but my car is usually filthy

Hi Guy - welcome to the fold. Decent looking wheels, bit ideally cheaper would be good. That's an early model with smaller brakes etc. Looks tidy enough, but I'd say probably over top end money. But prices on these change everyday and one like this might sell one day for £5k as daft as it sounds and the next £3k. What you have to focus on is buying a good one. The prices rarely really reflect condition it seems. So you get an early one that exceedingly tidy and you pay £4k that's better than a scrappy one on a 94 plate for £3000. Bodywork for most of us is the hardest thing to fix. The rest is mostly replaceable.

Let us know. e-bay links are fine. Even if you are selling. As long as you say that you are so we'd all be clear.

3.5 he said he would take.... it seems random prices arnt just me - 2 to 8k for a 90 - 93 100 to 200k miler in no order.

3.5 seemed 'sensible' for a sensible mileage, non offroaded - non caravan (no white socket) tower - tyres are road based, chap selling is 'well to do' - "bought it on a whim, as it reminded me of my time in Africa...." lol.

only problem is the 'intermittent dash warning lights' which appears to be the alternator or diode pack going down according to previous posts.

Hi Guy,

It looks a decent enough 80 series, but has been said, it is a little steep for pricing, maybe the seller just put £4000, and expecting to be chipped down.
I guess if you get it for £3500 then that is about the most it is worth, consider its age, but also cosider it's condition.
There are some real humdinger of "Shed 80 series" about, and teh seller is asking, well, lets just say daft money asked.

For the absence od a "White" towing socket, I wouldn't give that a second thought.
Really, the idea that it doesn't have a white towing socket for a caravan is here nor there.
The 80 series will pull a caravan, and a big caravan at that, with almost no effort at all.

Now to the alternator, well speak no furtherth than to Chris above, I think he is about one of the most clued up on alternators here at the moment. Not that he wanted to be mind you, it kind'a just happened to him,

If you could get the buying price closer to £3000, then I think that will be a fairer price, but £3500 isn't too excessive either.

Generally it is a good idea to mention something on Ebay that you plan to buy, or bid on.
In the main, members will respect this, especially if you say you will bid up to "XXX" amount.

Also, good idea to mention if you are the seller, , , , , , , , , ,.

anything that stands out that I should knock him down on? He advertised it at 5k obo - then it didnt sell, so he has re-advertised at 4 obo and has agreed verbally to take my 3.5 offer. Hes meeting me this morning on the A38 (he lives in the middle of nowhere) - he sounds quite well spoken, so Im doubtful its a scam.

The only thing I can see is the different batteries (which is a no-no from my camper-truck knowledge) and the known flickering warning lights (which is the alternator, supposedly)


oh - it has remote start from the key fob from factory.


anyway - im off in 45 mins, and I havent got dressed yet....

I trust then you are both going back to his house for coffee to determine he actually is teh owner, as per V5, and the receipt he got when he bought it?
I am sure he should be able to produce the receipt he got, with the previous owners name on it.

Just hit's out a bit, maybe I am over cautious.

If it was me spending that much money I wouldn't be for a meet-up anywhere but at the sellers home address , sounds a bit dodgy to my cynical old ears (he lives in the middle of nowhere) could just be an excuse for not revealing where he actually lives if I was you I'd insist on going to his home regardless of how refined he sounds on the phone, he could still be a shyster, you've got his home number from the eBay ad his address could be traced by that.

I deal with loads of people yet very few people know where my yard is. The reason for this is because as graham and chas are saying the bloke who's selling the truck could be anyone. As a seller I am in the same position with not knowing who the buyer is and they may come back to do some shopping when I'm not there.

Graham. People buy things as I do all the time without having a receipt for the purchase. I think you can get a good idea what someone is like.

I do ALWAYS have people at my home address though and they can see I'm a genuine guy. I also meet people in car parks etc etc if it's easier for them or me to save time.

You do have to be very careful when buying anything or dealing with anyone as there are plenty of idiots out there ready to take your money and run.

I'm sure the chap selling will be genuine and is just protective over his property.

We tend to think everyone is the same with experience etc. I suppose i am quite lucky in that way although i to have to be on guard.

From what yourself and chas were saying if he has any problem at all with going back to his house then there may well be concern. Its a shame that people have to be bothered about things due to a small amount of people who are out to rip us off.

I always arrange to meet people at the local pub, do the viewing and test drive and if they are serious I am more than willing to take them to my house and do the paperwork.

You're quite right Karl it is a shame, but it has to be done to be safe. When I bought my Lexus recently the seller suggested meeting somewhere on the MI (he was in South Yorkshire) but I insisted on meeting somewhere specific, we met in the end at his fathers house in London where I got invited in for a cuppa and a chat and everything turned out fine, but you have to be careful. Caveat Emptor, as they say

You do have to be careful.

With me doing alot of selling i understand why people meet away from there house. Theres a few people who just want to know where your stuff is so they can come back on there own.

Another chap who messes with cruisers had two go missing I am over the top with not having anyone at my place and it works for me. If a buyer insists that they come to my yard i send them on there way. Genuine people dont mind meeting at my house as they havnt any other reasons for wanting to case the place out,they just want the parts they have asked for.

I loose money by working how i do but untill i get a place where i can run a business from home i wont change.

Sadly not - there was a few problems with the motor - the guy seemed 100% genuine - two keys etc etc.

leaking fuel injectors ? leak off bolts loose?

leak at IP pipes (high pressure) - he has a recipt for the re-furb of the injectors - 400 quid for the injectors, 300 quid labour! and they couldnt tighten half the bolts! muppets.

all the warning lights come on when you boot it - i knew about this though.

leaking n/s axle wiper seal - the one on the big ball thing - again - receipt for it being done in 2009! o/s fine. he seemed genuinely shocked it was leaking like it was.

whine in drive from front - disappears on over-run. I presume thats a new front axle job.

I walked - the rest of the truck was nice though. f toyota sh to 140K miles!

Front wine was prob the diff. Injection pumps can be sorted for not alot of money really.

All i'll say is whoever owns my landcruiser after me will be happy .
