Hello All,
Moved from South Africa in 2001 and live in Milton Keynes. Toyota is KING in
South Africa and I always wanted to own a LC.
With my interest in serious off roading and wanting a SWB I bought a Jeep
Wrangler out the box in 2001, actually bought it for the wife and then after
modifying it too much she did not like it any more so it became my toy and I
had to buy another car. Needless to say I've spent far too much on this car.
A few years later I saw a SWB LC and fell in love immediately. In the end
after searching a bit on the net I came across a Jap import in January. It's
a KZJ71, called Prado. I like the fact that it has the 1KZ-TE 3L motor.
It's a 93 model and still needs a lot of tender loving care to get it to a
stage where I'll be happy. So far in the first few weeks I've installed a
OME kit and changed the tyres for a set of 32" x 11.5" BFG MT's.
I'm still trying to sort out the OME kit because the front went up by 50mm
whilst the back went up by 90mm. All this as part of a 50mm lift kit. I've
been assured the rear springs are not the heavy duty ones so should be OK.
The car does have a slight vibration around 40 - 50mph, which is expected
with such a huge lift. If I load the back with enough stuff to lower the
stance by about 50mm the vibration is noticeably less, however not
completely gone. Any advice will be much appreciated.
I unfortunately have plans for the Salisbury weekend so will miss the
opportunity to meet likeminded LC owners, which is a pity.
Best regards,
Dirk Theron

I'm a long way from being an expert, but my gut reaction would be something
prop shaft related.
I'm sure others will give more informed opinions.

Hi Dirk,
Welcome to the list.
Did you check the height of the springs against the factory ones before
fitting?
Also, were the springs fitted correctly? I've not done them on your model,
but have seen issues with them being put in upside down causing extra lift
and also springs that aren't properly seated (on an 80 the spring has to be
rotated so that the end fits in the 'cup') causing the same problem.
See http://www.sleeoffroad.com/technical/tz_ome.htm as a useful guide - you
can see photos half way down showing what I mean about springs being seated
properly.

Hi Julian,
Handy web site, thanks. I'm confident I've got the springs in as it should
be. The front springs were about the same height, however the back ones were
at least 2 inches taller (guessing). Could this be it?
Cheers

Hi Dirk,
If you have gone for a lift they should all be taller, although how tall
will depend on how much the old ones have sagged and a few other factors.
Are you/the supplier 100% sure that you have the right ones? If you let me
have the part numbers for the ones you have I can do some digging for you.
Out of interest, who was the supplier?

Hi,
Just to give you an idea of - my rear springs are 2 inch higher. I
have 235x85x16 BFG A/T. With the LC lightly loaded the top of the tyre
is almost on the lever with the gap betweeen the chassis and the wheel
arch.

Hi Julian,
I know Eddie from Frogsisland4x4 reasonably well and ordered the kit from
them. Have had numerous discussions with them before buying the kit.
In any case... the front is OME872 springs with N77 shocks and the rear is
on OME873 springs and N79 shocks. Interestingly the springs were not
labelled PS or DS, only the part number.
I struggled initially to identify the model number until I read the
identification label underneath the bonnet and had a chat with the spares
chap at Toyota who quickly identified the car with help from the chassis
number. It's a KZJ71W-PET frame, build in Apr 93.
Springs are all nicely seated in "cups" as per instruction. I did not
install blocks to lower the two sway bars, will this make a difference?
Cheers
