Hi Graham
Just though with you mentioning road tax in you last post, it costs 1600 euro now in Ireland to tax it for a year. Soon the road tax will be more than the cruiser is worth , its due to go up again this year.
cheers

I bought a 100 4.2 TD Auto last January (2008) for an overland trip to Australia. Was after a GX manual but there was none around. In fact there were only a few (5 or so) GX Autos. I paid =A39500 for a 2001 one keeper model on 104,000 miles. The big end went in Thailand but we've established it was my fault now! (a seal went on the power steering causing a leek so that it got so mashed up bits of metal went into the engine and b*ggered it completely - i thought the power steering fluid level was fine as there is a feeder back in on the top that was spraying fluid onto the dipstick - make sure you look inside). They obviously have independent suspension which isn't great for off-roading but OME suspension covers you for ground clearance. Other than that its been great with no other major probs. Not sure on the roadtax as mine is 01 and its =A3180 or something

Hi All
having recently sold my 80 series, I am now thinking of purchasing a 100 series 4.2 TD, Auto - have had a look at some of the info around and it would seem GX, but would not rule out a VX on Active ride alone.
I am looking for help and advice on what to look for - look out for?!
Probable prices and relative miles - do they run and run as per the 80 and previous Cruisers.Has anyone - Jon Wildsmith for instance - done any home work/research into these recently?
Recommended one for general use/towing/overlanding/off-roading ?
100, 000 + miles a problem?
Julian
your thoughts re the above and servicing prices/issues - ie. BEBS etc?
Jon (or anyone else who has purchased one in the not too distant past):
if you don't mind what did you pay and what did you get for your money?
Price for the TJM front bar? Where it was purchased?
Having looked at Autotrader etc there seems to be a few out there ranging in price from =A37k up to =A320k
would prefer to spend as little as poss, but prefer to spend a bit more for a nice cond lower mileage example - opinions welcome.
Presume these are liable for the higher road tax if newer than '01 - guess it would be approx =A3450 per annum - please correct me if I am wrong/confirm I am right.
Looking forward to some advice/opinions/experience
Cheers
Chris

Hi Guys
I have a leak at the rear axle seal which is proving stubborn to fix, now
will be on the 4th attempt to fix.
My question is if diff oil is leaking out, not much at all really, could
water or mud etc get into the diff if the axel is submerged in water.
cheers

Hello
If its the pinion seal, then yes, if oil can get out shit can get in, in
extreme situations. The biggest worry would be that you forget about
checking the level for a while and let it run dry of oil.
Never mind about the consequences, have you put much thought into the cause?
My bet is that your axle breather is stuck or clogged or that the pipe is
pinched. In all likelyhood if you get your axle breathing then your leak
will disappear. Worth investigating if nothing else.

Hi Huw
Thanks for the reply. The breather is fine (extended) and the oil is full.

You have actually checked it for free airflow then. Good. Or bad, because
now we still don't know what is causing the leak. Did you have grass or
string wind around the propshaft, being pulled into the seal?

Pinion bearing?
Take it out of gear and grab the whole prop shaft where it joins the diff
and jig it up and down and side to side.
If you have movement then it could be the pinion bearing in the diff?
I guess you have replaced the diff seal 4 times?

Hi Martin
I will try that tomorrow cheers.
No the mechanic replaced the seal once then built up the half shaft twice
because it still leaks,
Now he wants to replace the Toyota seal with another seal which he says
should work better.
So this is why it will be 4 times lucky or unlucky.

Are you sure you mean the half-shaft? Or do you mean the pinion shaft? The
distinction is rather important.

Hello guys
just to make your days brighter: some days ago I was invited from the sort
of chief of the mechanics in Toyota to investigate my mirrors and decide
what was the best possibilities to heat them up.while doing that high
qualified labour he managed to crack my left mirror in to pieces ,but
holding together yet.He said:don't you ever worry, pal, you won't pay anything
for that-just shit happens.I nodded understandably and went home.Couple of
days latter I get the GOOD news that the mirror has arrived and I should
just drop by to fit it.Well,I went there, and with a coup of coffee(very
good one) prepared myself waiting for the miracle to happen and get a brand
new mirror on my LC.But it was not used to be that way-while waiting at the
'sparepart desk' and chatting with the fellow why there was not powered and
heated mirrors for my LC,there came the mechanic with the glass mirror and
the spear part, which of course, was wrong one.He said that the fellow should
correct the fail at once(which means 3-4 days waiting again) and went to fix
the cracked one back on the LC.After 1/2 hour he came back and said that the
fellow should order the WHOLE MIRROR,'couse that one is 'so old' -almost not
possible to fix a new one in there.Just to let you know back in time 2
months I painted the car in Bulgaria and the mirrors were dismounted and
mounted again without problem,obviously!
PPS: by the way, while browsing through the pages to find the right mirror
for my car,the fellow find two type of mirrors:first just an ordinary one
,and then the more expensive, but listed as POWERED AND HEATED mirror.
Now...I don't know which one he ordered, but from what I saw, there was that
type of mirror that I was looking for. When I asked the fellow wouldn't that
one fit in my car,he replied:I don't know!I asked him whether I should go:
to the pharmacy perhaps to ask for that...anyway I was left without decent
answer
Cheers
Lubo
