oil cooler

Good morning guys
I was thinking again and just have this issue I need some feedback on.
Learning a little more about things as should be the case I would like to
know about extra cooling for the auto box oil.
It is reported that the ATF can really heat up when pressure is placed on
it, like up hill driving especially with a load on board.
Seeing as how you would need to to remortage your house to repair the box if
things went wrong, I want to think about helping it last longer.
Will any oil cooler do to cool the oil like the ones with the fins that
looks a bit like a smaller version of an oil storage heater for your house.
Sorry about the description. Or do you have to get a special one only used
for the purpose of cooling the ATF. Again im a bit lacking in this area but
not for long I think.
Thanks

Pretty much any oil cooler will do.
Try and go for a square(ish) one, and put a 6" fan off any decent sized motorbike on it. They all seem to pull, so need to be mounted behind the cooler.
Thats what I'm doing on my hybrid project.
I'm going to fit a gauge (VDO) and a manual switch for the fan, a thermostat is probably an option.

Hey Craig and Andrew
Thanks for the info. I have been keeping all things crossed in the hope this
would do and stay at a low price. Check out 8035995603 on Ebay of course.
Would this do for what i want if I mounted it in front of the rad in that
blank space where it would get loads of fresh air or would it block the
engine rad a bit too much.
cheers

That looks spot on
Plenty of brackets to mount
Banjo bolts will make hoses easy.
Stoneguard can only help.
I'd be tempted to get exact measurements off the vendor though.
Auto oil coolers are quite low pressure, so barbed fittings , hose and jubilee clips will be fine, no need for swaged joints.
Can't advise on postion as I haven't got a cruiser parked in my drive....yet.

Hey Andy
Thanks ill do that, its just ANOTHER whole new area I know absolutly
nothing about. I dont even know where you would connect it to the oil flow
or gear box or well anywhere for it to work. The main thing about buying the
cruiser is you will get one but you get what you pay for most of the time so
tread carefully cause when things go wrong with thenm he makes you cry into
your empty wallet.

Hi John,
That looks like an engine oil cooler you don't need anything that
handles that sort of pressure. I am not keen on used as they are very
difficult to get clean. There are rubber hoses going from the auto's
steel oil cooler lines to the cooler in the bottom of the radiator you
pull off the one coming out of the oil cooler and plumb it to the
external oil cooler with 3/8" hose and then return it back to the auto
through the original steel return line. As Reno suggested something like
Amsoil ATF is a good option you will need about 18-19L for a complete
change.

Hi Guys
Would this oil cooler that I have posted about be of any use to me as an
ATF cooler. The auction is over in little over an hour. The guy says as
Graig has rightly pointed out it is for use with engine oil or manual
gearbox oil. But is there a such a difference that this one cannot be used
by me for the ATF. Its off a race car which he says most parts are only
used once including this oil cooler. I dont know what is what so need your
guidance as usual.

John,
Have you seen an A/T oil coller that Toyota fits as standard for the
Middle East version? It comes as part of a kit that contains all the
bits and pieces but really the important parts are the exchanger,
brackets and the pipe unit that goes round the lower edge of the
coolant radiator.
The cooler on ebay will require a bit of metalwork to make the
brackets, but on the other hand is dirt cheap.

Hi Roman

up if I can but dont really know if it will be OK what do you think really

John,
If you have 25 quid burning a hole in your pocket.... Also, If you can
cheaply fabricate the brackets, go for it.
I can supply you with the pipe unit that goes round the lower edge of
the coolant radiator - I have one spare I can part with for a few
quid.

Ah Roman
Sure its the story of my life, I lost it by some cheeky guy who came in with
1 min to go. Up to that I had it and after five days of keeping an eye on
it. Now I suppose its an excuse to have a nice glass of french wine now.
Have you any info on the other oil cooler you were talking about. I can get
one in Aus but its 165euro and then they will hit me for duty. I got the
Walbro pump from the US and then got landed with a bill for 28 euro weeks
after.
Cheers

Hey Roman
Got the usual hard look e-mails from ebay with other oil coolers for auction
but with no bits at all just the cooler. So I was just wondering what would
I need bits wise to complete an installation of the cooler, just in case I
get a mind to go after one of them.
cheers

John,
Have you searched ebay for "oil cooler kit"? There are examples of
such kits for other cars. A HDJ80 installation is very much the same,
except maybe for hose diameters and the brackets to bolt down the
cooler in front the radiator.
