Phil, this sounds like a rubber bush somewhere in the back
suspension. BUT I once had a fitter forget to tighten-up the mounting
bolt at the body end of the stabiliser (or 'track') bar that anchors
on the chassis behind the axle and then the other end fixes onto the
axle beyond the diff. Mine made a similar bumping noise just because
the bolt was loose, even though the nut was on finger tight. I just
wanged it up as tight as I could go with some red Loctite on the
threads and its been OK since. Its worth having a look.

Hi Phil
Sounds obvious but it maybe.
I had this once and it turned out to be the bump stops, one had rusted
through and the other was well on its way.
Also inside the springs there is some sort of rubber stop to keep them from
bottoming out.
There is also the rubber bits on the anti rool bar brackets just in front of
the wheel arch, they rot and fall off.
Hope this helps

You shouldn't be hitting the bump stops in normal running, have a look were
they should touch the axle and see if there are signs of contact like it is
rubbed a bit, normally it will be dirty.

It sounds very obvious but you may not have considered it...
I got a bump at the back (once) yesterday after going over a pothole. I
stopped and had a look and my spare wheel was hanging a bit loose so I
tightened it up.
I don't know if it was the cause, but I didn't get any further bumps!
