This may or may not have been covered? As I continued updating my wiring today with new fuse boxes and cables, the OE power outlet fuse box was now surplus to requirements, it had been used to power the relay controls for my electric engine cooling fan. It was only after I had removed it that water run out! The design is such that the lower section is a 1/2 deep tray, there is no drain. I guess the water run off from the gutters finds it's way in there, I used the car wash a few days back but no rain for awhile has touched the car.

Once I turned it upside down I could see the terminals were starting to go green and corrode, so if you have anything hooked up to it, then may be worth a check?

Any chance of a photo of the offending article and location Dave. Cheers.

I've also noticed that said box seems to be prone to water ingress with resultant electrolytic corrosion of connections, especially the fuse holders. I give mine a spray with a dielectric water dispersant/corrosion inhibitor now and again which prevents corrosion and any resultant electrical issues.

I can't understand why there is no gutter around the engine bay. All you would need is for the wings to have an upstand on their edges. The amount of water running off the bonnet and screen must be a lot. I've had cars where there is an upstand all round and it's almost impossible for water to get in.

I think the smallest of holes drilled in the plastic base would sort this? To be fair, it has been in there 21+ years.

Agreed, if I was living in the UK, I would definitely bond some rubber door lining on or similar on the edge, just enough to keep the 'run off' in the gutter until it reaches the end.

As per post #5, the power outlet is between the right hand battery and air filter canister. Simple 10mm bolt and plug to remove. Once removed has no affect on rest of the vehicle systems. You can see the green corrosion working on the terminals, the base has a stain where water has been and dried out.

Interesting, I don't think I've got one of those on my 81. If you have a photo of its location and plug configuration I will have s look but don't go out of your way, it's just my curiosity really.

Between the battery and the airbox next to the inner wing.........

There you go StarCruiser, thanks TP , BTW the way, nice and clean under there but, is that a speck of dust on the third brake pipe down? :icon-biggrin:

Aha! I see where things are different. Clearly the later 24valve 80 which explains why my 94 doesn't have it. [emoji4]

Thanks guys I can sleep soundly now. [emoji4]

And that is far too clean for a 4x4. You don't have Codsy living down the road do you? [emoji4]

Dang! You're right. I'll be on it first thing in the morning:oops:

Mine IS a 94 12 valve, I am guessing it was a UK thing?

Looks like you are right in that case Dave. I wonder what it is for? I'm pretty sure I have the plug for it in the wiring loom around there.

It is designed as a convenient power control point to control a relay for example, if you had a winch, then you could use the winch solenoids power supply (not the main or heavy cables), but the actuation supply side. So your winch will not run unless your ACC or ignition is switched on. One of the ideas I thought about was to use it to be the supply for under bonnet lighting, if you close the bonnet and the lights were left on, when you switch off the ACC then the (forgotten) lights will go off and not flatten your battery, I changed that idea and may well use a mercury switch, loads of plans going on in my head but no time to get them done. :(
