A weld nut is simple =96 a nut welded on the inside a chassis rail etc.
The tool is known as a thread gauge in English.

Yes that does make more sens now. Is prisoner nuts not the same like weld
nuts? My nuts are welded inside the chassis rails (I think that is the
word?) so I had very hard time getting the correct bolts to fit the whole.
Here in France it is not allowed to drive cars any where with no bumper. I
had to buy a special tool called a comb to probe inside the nut whole and so
find the inside thread size.

Benoit,
You are probably referring to the bolts used for fixing the bumper
bracket to the chassis rails. I was taking about the bolts used for
fixing the bumper to the bracket.
The bumper bracket bolts are, if I remember well, are M10 and M8, fine
thread.
"Prisoner nut" is probably what we call "captive nut", isn't it? On
the chassis, there are actually weld nuts.
