I've been looking for two trolley jacks to cope with l'beast and so far
the ones that I've seen are for two tonnes apiece - does any of you nice
people know where I can get a couple of good, solid 3 tonnes trolley
jacks from?
Renate

Hi Renate,
Why do you need two? It would be cheaper to get one and then some axle
stands.
I picked mine up from a garage that was going out of business however
If you keep your eye on the Hilditch auction site
(http://www.hilditchauctions.co.uk/) based in Malmesbury, they have
monthly plant machinery and tools auction each month and you should be
able to pick one up there.

Because I'm planning major work (well, what I define as major) and need
something solid to remain there protecting l'beast for about a day...I
do have a couple of bottle jacks and have access to a couple of axle
stands - maybe these are enough?
I was thinking of getting a couple of second hand ones but haven't
succeeded yet - I never thought of going to auctions (maybe because I
more often than not either lose out or find I'm paying too much...)

Hello Renate,
Unless all four wheels need to be off the ground at the same time,
there's no job you can't do with one jack and two axle stands, that is
unless you have a stack of old bricks lying around :)

Nah! don't do bricks (took my neighbours entire wall down once with
with l'beast...) well, they were in the way and on our land...
I need two wheels of the ground and quite high (well, not stupidly high
obviously!) and I want to work on both sides at the same time...well, I
wanna try something to see if it works.

Hi Renate,
You should never rely on a jack to hold up a vehicle when working under
it - the safest route it to jack it up and put it on axle stands and
then remove the jack.
Also a set of four reasonable axle stands will probably be cheaper than
a decent 3 ton jack.
The key is to go into the auctions knowing what these things cost new -
find your local machine mart shop (there must be one in Bristol - look
at http://www.machinemart.co.uk/) and find out what a new jack/axle
stand will cost. The kit they sell isn't too bad, but provide a useful
guide.
Also keep an eye on eBay or more locally TradeIT (http://www.trade-
it.co.uk) - quite often you get mechanics selling off kit.
Some of the local hire shops (http://www.hss.com/) may be willing to
hire out jacks and axle stands for a few days at a good price.
Failing all that, ask around your local garages, you should be able to
find one willing to lend you a jack and/or axle stands for the price of
a beer.
