Rear Door issue - Need Advice

I had something similar happen on a Volvo I owned back in the day. When I bought the car, I asked if it had ever been damaged and the previous owner told me the door had been hit and replaced. I guessed the hinge plate had been damaged too, but it took a couple of years before it failed. A friend managed to weld a plate over the hole and we fixed the hinge to the new plate. Couldn't really tell once I sprayed it in and couldn't see it once the door was closed.
