John,
Depends on how it is to be fitted.
The UK/EU landcruisers DO NOT come with rear panel reinforcment to fit body
attached (rear panel) swing out carriers. This are factory 'created' for the
African/Asian market.
You could reinforce if u havea good welder but good luck - not heard of
anyone that has ever done this.
Most swing-out carriers are done via a customer bumper or attached to the
rear frame.
Post some pics and keep us posted on how u do.
Is this model 'made for' a particular type of truck?

Hi lal
Dont do that to me, you have me all nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnervious now. I bought
it from a place in the Uk and it has two arms that attach to the rear
pillar, one at the bottom and one half way up the pillar. So you think my
cruiser wont take it.

Hi lal
Sent an e-mail to the supplier and he said as far as he knows the jap and
the Uk models are the same spec. Does any one else know anything about this.

John,
The Japanese spec 80s are very similar to the UK ones, however there
are some differences.
The ones with the wheel carriers are supposed to have re-inforced D
pillars to support the carrier. They also have a modified boot lids
that also takes some of the weight of the carrier.
I haven't heard of anyone that has retrofitted a wheel carrier from a
Japanese 80 to a UK or other country one. The sort of people
interested in doing so for extreme off road use would rather use
something else because the Japanese wheel carriers which aren't
renowned for their strength.
I would go back to Direct4x4 and see what they have to say about it.
Also investigate to see what support the carrier kit comes with for the
D pillar.

Hi Julian
Thanks for your reply. I did contact Direct 4x4 and they said as far as they
know there is no reason why it will not fit and fit properly, as far as they
are concerned all the 80s have the same pillar support. I contacted Toyota
and they said that as for as they know all the 80s are the same in that
regard. he explained that production lines are very costly and he cant see
them Toyota changing the production line for things like support for the
pillars. He said it would be too costly and they would either put iit in all
or none. Concidering that they will not give you an extra bulb, he may be
right. He said they would fit it no problem for me. Me being me I will have
to get more info before I go ahead.

hi
if it's similar to the one's used on a hilux surf it will require
two "u"shaped reinforcing plates fab'd up and then bolted inside the rea
pillar (above and below the light cluster). not hard to do, but the attachment
plate on the rear door may make it neccessary to relocate the number plate
and, according to uk law, the no. plate light.
i bolted a surf swing out carrier onto my uk 4runner and have had no probs so
far even with all the harsh treatment it gets here in africa.

Hi Jeremy Elphick
Thanks for your thoughts on the carrier. Yea Ill have to move the number
plate but ill come up with some thing. Im just worried about the
possibility of the carrier being too heavy with the wheel for the pillar. I
was as happy as larry who ever he is , but must be a happy lad all the time,
untill i started to question the ins and outs of it before it is placed
there on the rear. I tent to question a lot when im not sure.

Jap and UK modes are likely the same.
The only models that get the rear swing out factory installed are Africa and
some Asia (UAESaudi) models. They also have extra stuff e.g. special a/c,
bigger oil coolers/altenators etc.
These are reinforced at the factory.
Have u a pic (or utl link) that shows how it attaches?
