Recommendations needed please.

Do make sure it's turned on
Don't forget to turn it off when you get out to punch the idiot who pulled out in front of you

I've got one similar to this.
http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/171565554624?nav=SEARCH

picture quality is ok, could've spent more but gave it a shot for the price.

Edit.

Don't have the small screen like the one in the link, about the same size just a lower spec that I have.

I reckon I have gone through 5 cameras in the last couple of years - reliability issues etc. By far the best one was this one Not the cheapest, but it wifi etc.

I see Amazon offer a suction mount as an optional extra, does the camera not come with a mount? and what is the WiFi for?

yes, comes with everything, might not have a micro SD card though? I cant remember
wifi is so you can download your videos to a tablet/phone without having to either demount camera or take out SD card. a bit easier thats all!

I have one of these

It doesn't have a screen, but it does have wi-fi connection to a wristwatch type screen or your smartphone/tablet. Memory is via an onboard SD card (64GB optional) and you can use it inside or outside the truck, comes with transparent waterproof case and a number of fitment options, for helmet, dash or exterior bar grips for bike, roof rack or winch bar.

As a Santa gift, I don't know the price, but it wasn't cheap I guess. It's 1080p and gives a good image.

Do you have a model number for that Sony Clive?

HDR-AZ1 VR Chas, it's a new model but there are similar other Sony models too, the HDR-AS100 VR but it's bigger, otherwise I don't know the difference.

The live-view remote "watch-strap" screen RM-LVR2V is GPS equipped.

There's also a waterproof case SPK-AZ1, even though the camera is weatherproof without.

There's a shed load of accessories, different mounts and stuff, there's even a harness to strap one on a dog! WTF!

Thanks Clive, there's a few on eBay, but the BIN ones are not cheap, I'm watching one on auction but I expect the price will go up.

Thanks for all the input chaps, Had a nice reminder in the post this morning to tax two of my fleet, forgotten about that, that's the trouble now with no disc in the window to remind you, anyway dash cam is going on hold for now.

You could also consider the gopro 4, the entry level model is about £90.00, and would make a decent incar camera, very high quality film.
