Recommended mechanics and transmission specialist in London?

Hi fbnss! I'm in Lewisham
Well I'm in sunny Watford and will be changing my oil and filters in the next couple of weeks if you'e interested. Don't ask me anything technical though. Timing belts are an adults job in my eyes. Take Chris up on his offer though, a true fountain of knowledge there!

..and he makes a mean bacon and black pudding sarnie ;)

I found it very helpful when @fbnss popped round to give me a hand with my first service so if you do take him up on the offer I'm happy to pop along to say hello/volunteer some elbow grease.

If you haven't spotted the various threads on servicing yet I recommend you give Simon Holton a call and order the service kit which includes all the fluids and filters you need, shipped to your door at a very reasonable price

I am only a few miles east of Lewisham. But things are a bit up in the air at the moment.

I think I am covered on the insurance on my Hilux actually. But there's plenty of places to go for a spin around here. Not sure of the last time I actually saw a policeman. I can certainly recommend Roughtrax for your service items.

Thank you to everyone who is offering to help!
My Landcruiser is due for a major service, but before I get started with servicing, I'd like to order all the misc bits.

My shopping list so far includes:
- Timing belt, tensioner and idler pulley
- Oil/air/fuel filters
- Sump Plug Washer
- Water pump
- Engine oil
- Axle oil

Is there anything else I've missed that I may require to buy as part of a major service?
Please note, I've deliberately omitted transmission oil and anything to do with brakes as I will be working on those separately at a later time.

Water pump? That's fairly major. Are you doing that just because you're doing the timing belt or is there a problem?

Alternator belts
AC belt
Transfer box oil (nothing to do with gearbox and ATF mix)
Prop shaft grease
Clutch fluid (same as brakes obviously) Well worth bleeding as it improves the clutch pedal significantly
Radiator cap (depending on age also your coolant and possibly thermostat)

Thanks Chris, I'll get hold of those extra bits as well. As for the water pump, I was thinking of replacing it as a matter of precaution as it is years old, has at least 100,000 miles on it and I will be probably doing another 100,000.

Mr Red

I'm based in Brockley.

I know very little about the mechanics of my 120 but its something I really like to learn more. I like to offer an extra pair of hands if there of use to you. It be a great way for me to learn some basics.

Toyota recommend changing the water pump at the same time aa the timing belt

My original water pump let go at 250000 miles..

Nice! I'll admit I'm being a bit overly cautious but it's also a good opportunity for me to become more familiar with the mechanics of the car.

@Chris I'm starting to order the bits I need for the car and would like to give your 50/50 mix a go. What grade of gearbox oil and ATF would you recommend (I know nothing about oils)? Also, what type of oil should I get for the transfer box?

Cheers

There isn't a grade of ATF. It's just AAA TEEE EFFF. That's it. The manual gear oil is as per the owner's manual. 75w 90. The tranny box is the same. It's only the axles that are 80w 90 so don't mix those up.

I was offered 3 different specs of ATF so I just guessed. He was showing me 3 bottles so I chose the middle one. lol.

Axle oil must be EP as well as 80-90 grade.

Haha I think I'll also go lucky dip with the ATF

I'm looking at buying a timing belt set, consisting of a timing belt, tensioner and idler pulley and have the choice of the following kits

1. Genuine Toyota timing belt with aftermarket (NTN) tensioner and pulley - £95
2. Genuine Toyota timing belt, tensioner and pulley - £243

Is it worth all the extra money to get a genuine tensioner and pulley?

Just buy the Toyota belt and just check that the tensioner and pulley are OK. Whatever the outcome I would only use genuine Toyota parts as failure would mean a replacement engine.

Great point Frank. I've seen a timing belt go before and it was a very sad day indeed. I'll go for the genuine kit. Cheers

Just had a big service and MOT done yesterday. They replaced my timing belt. It was 30 quid + VAT. I'm guessing it wasn't genuine Toyota. The guy who did, I trust him, it wouldn't be in his interest to sell low quality parts as its a small business.
