RedBull Stratos...Felix Baumgartner.... FreeFall

What happened to the balloon and capsule used yesterday?? Off on its own somewhere? Space junk?? Or has it been vented and allowed to drop into the sea somewhere?

Could have been vented, but it would only have risen while it was still within the atmosphere then would have stayed there until it either burst or deteriorated and fell.

Kittinger 1959. That's right. Back in the day stunts were done properly and people got entertained properly. If you didn't like it you didn't watch. And if you didn't want to get hurt you didn't go to watch. Watch Evil Kneivils Caesars Palace Motorcycle jump on utube if you dare!

I was there when Evil Kneivil jumped 13 London buses at Wembly in 1975.

So why did he not reach terminal velocity of about 195 km/h (122 mph or 54 m/s)? Is that because there is less wind resistance that far up?

Yes, I believe so - effectively he is falling in very thin air which much less resistance.

The heights that "normal" skydivers jump from, the air is pretty uniform and hence the "standard" terminal velocity. However FB is jumping from the stratosphere or whatever which is nearly space!

I was there when that happened.........to me in 1962. Trouble is no body else was. So I was stuck under the bike with the LH clutch lever stuck through the top of my leg just by my zip. I thought it must have brocken off then realised it was up to the hilt. After a bit of sruggling I managed to get free and stagger to the bus stop and went to Cheltenham A+E. 2 nice nurses leant on my chest whilst a surgeon cleaned out the hole with alchohol and forceps and then proceeded to stich me up from he inside, All with no anaesthetic. When I sat up he shook my hand and said not to ride MC's again so I didn't .....untill 1985.

Yep me to

Where were you? I was in the front row with Evil jumping from my right to my left, got a great view and some good pics, but pre-digital of course. No idea where those pics are now though, stuffed in some drawer probably.

      He's Austrian.

Just finished watching the jump on BBC...bloody amazing what the human race can achieve.

Caught the last 20mins, incredfible story!

Absolute nutter,

I watched the programme from the beginning, talk about building up the tension, did anyone else think the sequence about the visor fogging up was a bit iffy?

It didn't seem to be fogging up with any sort of pattern that you would expect from normal breathing, sometimes the whole visor would fog, other times just a little and there
were times when if didn't fog at all, did he stop breathing!! :icon-eek:

Has there been a program about it today? I'll have a look for it on iplayer if so

What really happened.
