removing the back sliding small windows

Does any one know how to remove the small back sliding windows from the landcruiser, safely.

Do you want the complete window out or just the glass? If you want the whole thing out How i do it is start at the bottom of the window rubber nearest to the front of the car,put a slotted screwdriver in as far as you can and put pressure on it to prise it out,then use another slotted screwdrive a couple of inches higher and move around the window. Be careful not to damage the paintwork as this is why some cruisers rust there.

I can get both out in a couple of minuets no probs

Can the glass be removed without removing the whole assembly from the bodywork?

On a similar subject (didn't see the point of having 2 treads running at the same time) I want to remove both the back sliding window units and replace them with a solid window and frame. Does anyone know what parts I need to do the conversion and where I might find them?

Hi Ecoman, I would guess you need the solid windows from a 95-96 GS model as a solid replacement, be aware that the tint will be different, some imports have solid rear windows.So I guess its a breakers.

Andy is right. You will find the solid window in gs models and imports.

Havnt taken the sliding windows out whist in the truck. They go back in quite easy. Not as easy as taking them out though

I wanted to remove the glass to clean all the crap were they overlap and to stick tint onto them more easily...if it can ever be easy!
I may go down the replace the whole unit with the single piece.

I was told by Autoglass or Autowindscreenes that the solid glass can be bought new,dont know the price.

I was chatting to my local windscreen dealers (Scotglass), who incidentally is a LC owner too, and we were wondering how it could be converted. Is it just a case of getting the rubber/frame to fit the windows or is there trim involved too? The glass is not a problem. I'm getting my windows tinted and thought I better look into the conversion before I end up wasting money doing it afterwards.

Just had a look at one of each model,all you need is 2xglass and 2xGS window rubbers,looks like a straight swap to me.

It is probably a quieter way than smashing the glass.

Looking at the window seal I would say that to have to be inside anyway to remove the window and seal.

How is this different to all other cruisers (and other cars) with rear "quarter" windows? Or any car with a rear windscreen - pretty easy to pull those out too. I think that's why insurers expect people to have car alarms fitted.

Anything with windows like the 80s have are easy to get into.

no different to people being able to get through the windows in your home or through a locked new pvc door.

The windowscreen is as easy as is the back window.

I have had to take the glass out of my truck a few times when i have left my keys somewhere or locked them in my car, as i have had to in my old escort van, fiesta xr2 i etc etc.

Most people understand how these things can be done. There are alot about who dont respect peoples property though and who run on the wrong side of the law. Had a motorbike stolen from home couple of years back and lost 2500 as it wasnt insured. All i can say is wanxxxs!!!!!!!!!

Alarms or no alarms if the dixxs want it they will have it, always make it harder for them.

You could always use tiger seal to put the rear windows back in. They wouldnt get them out then, prob just pop the glass

What came of this?? I have sliding windows in my 80 and am considering going to fixed and from what i have found out you need the rubber, trip and plastic vent.

Gull wing windows would even be better but at $1450 for a set I can not justify the cost.


Lastly is the general consensus that fixed is better than sliding?

I like the sliding rears and think they're a good feature. Wouldn't be without mine. Also very handy for getting some fresh air in the back if you're a dog owner. One major omission from the 80 series IMO is the lack of a rear load cover as fitted to the 100 series.

I like the sliding windows too as its great to be able to throw things in the back with out opening the tailgate. Happy to keep them if people thing they are better but need to replace the rubbers as mine are a little old now.Just considering my options and wondering what people thing works best.

Great thread, I have been considering changing mine as the tracks get full of sand. Having said that it has been parked for so long now without a transmission it has probably taken root. The break in point of view is pretty much not worth mentioning, if they want in then they will get in....period.

I did like them slightly open when sleeping as it did provide fresh air during the night but I don't plan sleeping in there in future so, had decided to go for the fixed window as it gives the cruiser cleaner lines and there are not tracks to clean out.

Loved the gull wing glass kit....pricey but a great idea.
