Renate try these people, they claim to import fresh salvage from Japan,
notably engines transmissions and axles. But I give them no warrant, except
that some of the Pajero boys have used them...

There are other breakers who are in a sort of 'club' and they pass your
request around - I believe - 6 yards at a time till they find your
part. It may be http://www.partsgateway.co.uk, but I may well be wrong
though it sounds similar.
Finally (bearing in mind your 'wrong' Birfields), I have to remind you
that some time ago the committee advised that knowing the source of new
spares at the right price was not the way to go about maintaining the truck
if you were not a mechanic yourself. The secret is finding the right
mechanic first and then letting him do the analysis of the problem and then
advising where to get the spares. Now you have found him hopefully he will
get you out of trouble. Not gloating - as we all love you dearly - but just
hoping others will take advice before leaping. That is why Julian brought
us all together after all ! Best of luck with sorting your problem, I would
put myself on the list for that free booze if only I was in UK. Instead I
ma having a boring 'islamic' christmas out here. Good luck.

Thanks for your comments - in the end the CVJs were the right ones, it
was the drive shafts that are in need of being new - now I'm objective
and analytical again - I've sourced all I need from a contact in the
States - one email to him and he'll ship them over for me, and I'll
receive them within 36 hours.
Like everything, garages, in my humble experience, whether they are
Toyo affiliated or not, do have a distressing habit of kicking you in
your teeth when you're already down.
Now, I would like to appeal for help in replacing the old front drive
shafts - Matt is a bike and light car mechanic, not a 4x4 mechanic.
As you know, many of you know that I live in the SW of the UK, so if
there are any 80s people out there, can they contact me please? as I'm
willing to offer payment in the form of booze and things, maybe even a
meal and wine - no romance here, just basic wanting to source someone
who is familiar with 80s and is willing to take the axle apart and
together with moi, and put it back together with me - I don't mind
getting dirty, so please, are any of you willing to do this? I'll be
very grateful.

Hi,
I had my drivers front in bits on Sunday to replace the swivel seals so
I took the opportunity to check my memory on bushings ... definitely
only a brass bushing on the rear of the drive spindle, and it is
'scored' from the factory in an interesting pattern but I have no idea
of its purpose. I also couldn't see any way the drive shafts (inner or
outer) could become scored without complete failure of the CV allowing
it to move more freely.
Don't know if this helps at all but wanted to follow up on my previous
assertions about bushings.

My front axle drive shafts are scored, one worse then the other.
I believe this problem has been around for a while and was missed when
I had the last major service (toyota not doing their job right,
methinks)(last time I'll take the Beast to them!). Part of the spindle
has damaged the shafts methinks.
I know I have this problem but I'm quite au-fait with it now, and there
is no point in fretting - I can't get it sorted until later in the
month, anyway, so am just driving the beast very carefully, especially
around bends/roundabouts - its not the tight ones that worry me, its
those sweeping bends around roundabouts when the axle starts complaining
a bit...

MPH TO KPH Moan

Hi Guys
Just thought I would let you all know that our wonderful Gov had decided to
replace all the mph limits with kph. That may sound great but all the
vehicles up to now have there speedos in mph We also have a penelty points
system for a wide range of driving offences, can you imagine the problem
now. Its hard enough looking at your speedo every 30 or so seconds to make
sure you have not been speeding but now we will have to look at the mph
then change it to kph aswell. Or we could look at the smaller kph on the
speedo for when you see the signs in kph and then look at the mph on the
speedo for when the signs are in mph. This country can not get the simplest
of things right most of the time, I can not imagine them changing all the
road signs in the whole country and getting it right.
