Have fitted a set of 235/85/16 Michelin XZL's to a set of Toyo steel
rims. SO heres a quick update on how I found them FYI
Clocked up a day off road and 400kms on wet tarmac.
Onroad:
They are very noisy. Like the noise a dynamo makes on a bicycle, but
magnified by a high factor.
The grip in the wet on the tarmac was not noticeably less than
previous 285/75/16 BFG AT's. Having said that I was wary of the
reputation of XZL's in the wet and probably slowed down a bit.
Off road:
Very impressed. Excellent in the mud and I powered through anything I
could find. Having said that they were not noticeably any better than
the BFG AT's. The aggressive tread is comforting when you're about to
go wading ;-)
Gravel:
Was like being on train tracks. We were on a circut of Ireland Rally
road and the boots were excellent on the gravel. Very sure footed -
beat the BFG's in that department hands down.
Handling generally:
The size change seems to have made a big difference to the handling
generally. I seemed to bounce around the road alot on the
285/75/16's. The smaller235 tyres are definetly more stable and I'd be
slow to go back to the bigger ones.
Summary:
XZL's all the way for off road and down size the boots
Thanks
Niall
