Road Test Michelin XZL's

Have fitted a set of 235/85/16 Michelin XZL's to a set of Toyo steel
rims. SO heres a quick update on how I found them FYI
Clocked up a day off road and 400kms on wet tarmac.
Onroad:
They are very noisy. Like the noise a dynamo makes on a bicycle, but
magnified by a high factor.
The grip in the wet on the tarmac was not noticeably less than
previous 285/75/16 BFG AT's. Having said that I was wary of the
reputation of XZL's in the wet and probably slowed down a bit.
Off road:
Very impressed. Excellent in the mud and I powered through anything I
could find. Having said that they were not noticeably any better than
the BFG AT's. The aggressive tread is comforting when you're about to
go wading ;-)
Gravel:
Was like being on train tracks. We were on a circut of Ireland Rally
road and the boots were excellent on the gravel. Very sure footed -
beat the BFG's in that department hands down.
Handling generally:
The size change seems to have made a big difference to the handling
generally. I seemed to bounce around the road alot on the
285/75/16's. The smaller235 tyres are definetly more stable and I'd be
slow to go back to the bigger ones.
Summary:
XZL's all the way for off road and down size the boots
Thanks
Niall

Niall,
Glad you found the Michelins a good investment.
IMHO, the reason why people want to pay big money for Michelins is not
comfort or prowess off-road, but the fact that they can take more
abuse without getting punctured and tend to last longer.
I don't know about XZL's, but when you run out of thread on Michelin
X tyres, you can sipe them to increase groove depth. Don't try it on
BFG's!

Niall,
I've just looked up my archive. Apparently, you can regroove XZL as well.
Where did you buy them and how much?

Thats interesting and good to know !!
They were hard enough to get, but a lad in Dublin managed to get me a
set of 6 for =80200 each - fitted, balanced, including VAT.
Cheers

Niall,
The tyre should have a marking on the side indicating the max depth
it can be regrooved.
Arrrh... thought you know someone selling them off the back of a lorry :)

Nice mini review. Couple questions.
Are you using tubes or tubeless?
Do you think the performance on wet tarmac was helped by tire not being as
fat, so adding to the contact pressure. Once saw an video of a 911 being
out braked from speed (if a 2CV can be accused of speed!), in the wet by a
2CV, was quite a while ago, doubt either had ABS.

Hi Malcolm
Tubeless
Interesting point. Quite possibly. Also note worthy was the fact that
when I hit a large body of water the deluge of water goes out to the
side as opposed to onto the windscreen...
Cheers

2cvs were/are famous for their ability to stop - at least the later models,
as they had inboard disc brakes on the front, big and well ventilated for
the size and weight of car. And they were extremely light... Used to run on
tall, thin Michelins too if I remember rightly.

PS Are my messages getting through???

I heard that one of the problems with 2CV's was the cost of replacement door
handles! and yes Jeremy your messages are getting through.

Well the guys I think you are not thinking scientificly. May be that
XZLs have some smaller feetprint but Ok if that logic is so good then
poout on bicycle tires.
I have them XZL on my Range Rover when I buy it but in mud she is a
hope less pig, so I buy some Fedima Scirroco tires with large lumps on
them and now I dominate the mud spots with my buddies all suck my
tracks! Blackstar and Mudmax is also good tires. I am save my XZL
for spare tires.
Not to want to offense you guys and Renate too.....

Benoit,
If you don't like your XZL's and they are in good condition, could I

Oh Roman that is a good offer, but I refer to keep them for spare
wheels because they are mounted with 5 extra Range Rover roadwheels.
