Sad times.....

We had my youngest daughter's christening over the weekend and I was
persuaded by my wife to wash the car, and encouraged by my 4 and 5 year
olds to take them through a car wash.
Now I have had this particular 80 for 18months and apart from a
attacking it a couple of times with a pressure washer to remove
seriously thick mud (after Salisbury '04 and the end of the '04/05
shooting season) and relatively regular trips through a local
watersplash, I've not bothered washing it.
Anyway we went for the 'works' at the car wash (only just fit with
about 1" either side of the wing mirrors) and the results are appalling
- all these shiney silvery bits have appeared and it now looks some
sort of metalic dark green colour. I keep on getting distracted by
reflections in the body work and every time I look out at it I wonder
whose car it is, I'm certainly far too embrassed to take it out for a
drive in it's present state - at least it was thick fog on Sunday so
nobody saw me.
Well, I have had enough of it and am off to find a mud pit at the
weekend to put it through to get some colour back into it's flanks.
And the next time my wife suggests that I should wash the car, I think
I'll just ignore her! She is as embarrased about it as I am.
[I know many of you were passionate about getting your LCs cleaned
after Salisbury last year - you really shouldn't bother, you get a lot
less hassle and more respect if you don't. The last time I took a
clean 80 into town (the rural haven of Cirencester where every other
car is a 4x4) I got a key run down the side of it.]

I must admit I don't bother with the outside of the car except for cleaning
glass, headlamps, etc.
I'm a bit anal with the inside however - the dust proofing on my car is
pretty good but you cannot stop the stuff in Africa and occasionally I did a
bit of housework while we were away. More important that the thing is
mechanically neat and tidy and fully functional...
At least you'll have the chance for a play to get the old look back...

Jeremy,
I surmise you have air conditioning. For me dust was a real nuisance,
particularly at the back of the car. Back home I removed from the
floor in the cargo space a crust of compacted dust about 5 mm thick.
It killed the CD player and the remote control, a camping lamp charger
and a few more minor items. The trouble was I couldn't find how it got
inside the car - the hatch and rear door seals seemed OK, and the side
vents were fitted with foam filters.

Yes I do have air conditioning but I rarely use it and only used it on our
trip on the way back when a leaking windscreen seal caused serious misting
on the inside of the windscreen. The dehumidifying worked a treat. In
extreme heat as you know, dehydration is potentially dangerous and aircon
dehydrates the body faster than almost anything. One reason why we dehydrate
on planes, again made worse by pressurisation. It is also a good idea to
avoid orange juice and coffee as they have the same ability to dehydrate
rapidly. Litres of water...So it has to be said I use my aircon more in
winter to demist and only occasionally in the summer when a quick blast is
needed on the North Circ or M25.
I lived in Kenya for over 20 years and the only cars with effective dust
seals, 4x4s included, were peugeots and citroens - simply because the local
dealers fitted huge seals on the doors and hatches. Its an occupational
hazard... For some of the time I cling-filmed and taped the cd facia up to
keep the dust out. Missed the music though...
