Yes Chas, it's amazing. I do have a camera, but I haven't been able to convince myself that I need a super DSLR despite knowing that the majority of photos taken with it would be stunning, but since having an iPhone, I use the camera much less frequently.
Photos with it are far from perfect and well inadequate by DSLR standards, but for everyday snaps, they're great!
I still find it hard to believe that this was taken on an iPhone, but there you go.... an amazing picture.

I feel the same Clive, I would love an all bells and whistles new Nikon but my Samsung S4 takes good pictures so why bother, I have an SLR Fuji, but it's so long since I used it I had to get it out to remember the make. 
Well mine's just a Nikon Coolpix, but it's also the technology support that goes with the iPhone (and similar).
Example, the Nikon is on the coffee table so I took a photo of it with the iPhone. Now I can upload it to this thread from my iPad, from photo stream, and if I was to open my laptop, all my iPad and iPhone photos are automatically uploaded there.
Convenience is the master these days, no fumbling in a dark room to get a picture (like I used to when I was about 15)

Just ask yourself what you need a camera for and what type of pictures you'll be taking. If you're just into holiday snapshots like the one of the castle or souvenir pics then you're wasting your money on a SLR IMO. If, like me, you're into motorsport or maybe even fast moving wildlife photography then a phone camera or a 'point and shoot' jobby is useless. Of course a SLR will do all these things but I rarely use it for holidays or general photography 'cos it's so damn big and cumbersome compared to the little Olympus compact I also have which, as far as resolution and quality go, takes pics as good as the Nikon but it's of little or no use at a race circuit! JMO
Its my opinion too. The DSLRs are massive, especially with a decent lense on it. My old Nikon seems bulky compared with the little Sony my wife has, but I must admit, it usually beats her picture quality, for snapshots.
The downside is the iPhone is totally crap in low light.

Probably why so many of the newer DSLRs are now wireless enabled and you can upload directly from them - but a decent 35mm SLR and slide film is still unbeatable - just totally inconvenient

Tbh camera wise we use the phones less, we bought ourselves a decent camera, lives in its camera bag so a bit easier to transport but if we're going out for the day we take it. Always feels easier to have a camera on a strap round your neck ready to take pics.
