Who is in the know about their products....

I want to know what their stuff is like....
I mean I know the Americans rate them high but hey a Big Mac is rated high over there so I would like to have some comments from people that are closer...
Specially considering the climate is a little different here...

So anyone??

I am thinking of ordering some uprated products there soon...
The truck is going to have a start made at the more drastic part of the overland prep soon so I thought I will start collecting parts...

Oh yes and I am in nead of yet another inner axle seal so thought some uprated ones might be a better bet....

I think Slee's stuff is genuinely pretty good. Jon W has used some of his stuff, so can comment on the quality. Not sure that they're set up to export stuff, so expect to pay through the nose for shipping charges, foreign credit card charges and the like...

Cheers,

I was quoted £180 delivery for a transfer case slider!

good quality parts, no question about that, just check for surcharge on international (i.e. uk) cards, high shipping costs for heavy items and of course import duties/VAT because it can get a bit expensive ;)

Right I see...
could be an expensive adventure then... unless if I have someone over there to post too...

Is there any good uprated stuff within the EU that anyone know's of?
I do a lot of hard miles in the truck on and off-road so everything will need to be more lasting from now on top quality so to speak...

How about CV's? Genuine Toyota or the uprated Aussie ones...?

I hear their stuff is good but shipping is an issue.

Didn't someone mention about being setup as some kind intermedary with an address in the States for onward shipping without being subject to the extra taxes and charges?

I think ary had that info. A US drop box.
I have a few friends there who could redirect it "for your birthday" if you want.

A quick search of members here has shown no-one with the name 'ary'.

However, I seem to be closest to it

Yep - go to www.BundleBox.com and set up a free account. The US supplier ships to there, and BundleBox consolidate I think and send it on to you. My 'address' is in Kentucky!!

HTH

now we are getting somewhere....
thanks Crispin and Gary....

so as for the quality?
advisable then or will I be able to get similar stuff closer to home?...

I think Cristo Slee has a pretty good reputation - not sure he'd be going so long in the USA if he didn't do the basics right.

Depending on what it is you want, though, I'd think there are a lot of very capable people here that can help out - at least with design and suggestions - that you can potentially get fabricated to spec by a local business who would be pleased to get the work. Any issues could also then be quickly and easily sorted.

Having gone the route of underbody protection commercially (ASFIR), then seen Gavs designs and costings, and knowing what it'll cost me to get a decent packing system that is custom-designed vs. what's for sale commercially, I'm less tempted to go the commercial route now. Even if I will have to learn to weld sooner or later :D

Specialist stuff such as Roof Tents and suspension - go commercial. But for stuff I've seen recently being turned out by 'hobbyists' I'm constantly impressed with the ingenuity and skill I see around me on the forum. The willingness to help is a big bonus, too.

Just my 2p-worth ;)

What are you thinking of buying Toby? I'll only charge you half of Slees shipping costs for one of those transfer box guards ;-) (Thanks Andrew ;-))

I know what you mean Garry.....
But I ment more for things like inner axle seals, uprated prop, driveshaft, axle shafts, ujoints, CV's (although might go genuine on them) stuff like that...

I know to find other (local) people for other things.....

Yeh you and I will need to get together about some protection and things in the near future...

Mister Powdercoater is weaving his 'black' magic as we speak Andy :D I'll let him get a brew on & give him a tinkle later on to see where we're up to with them. Probably be next week by the time I can get over to pick 'em up now... Bloomin' 4-day weeks

Cheers

The 'uprated' inner axle seals aren't worth it for overlanding, they are too stiff and will cause premature wear to the halfshafts.

Also the uprated CVs are for improved shock loads, but again wear quicker.

Most of the kit like that is intended for rock crawling or bog stomping where the truck gets a severe bashing, but the mileage is minimal and it is serviced regularly - they aren't really suitable for the distance stuff.

mmmm now that is changing my perspective...

I did decide on genuine CV's already or the "outback" aussie upgrade...

HELPPPPP..!!!

but my "genuine inner axle seals" only lasted about 10 months on the front L/H side...
Could the axle housing be slightly bent?
It seemed straight but......

I hear such good things about the Marlin Crawler inner axle seals though.... you really think it's no good?

or is 10 months the norm?

10 months doesn't sound very long, however it depends on how they failed.

I could blame the fitter  however more likely than not I wouldn't be surprised if it was a breather issue - I'm guessing you have a pre Aug '92 model??? The older breather unions had a pitifully small breather hole that was prone to blocking, particularly if you off roaded a bit - you need to take this breather union off and drill it out with a 5mm drill (carefully otherwise you can snap the drill).

The other thing is the condition of the CVs - a worn CV will lead to excessive movement in the halfshafts that will also lead to wear.

For overlanding, just run with Toyota inner seals, later (with ABS rings) CVs and drive flanges from Milners, do the Martack welding mod on the halfshaft so you don't need to use the snap rings on the CVs and pack the knuckles so they are around 3/4s full of grease. Yes the CVs won't last as long as genuine ones, but value for money they will be fine. I've had trucks do 40-50k miles round Africa with this combo without any problems.

I have to disagree with Julian here. In my opinion OEM is the only way for overlanding. The last thing you want is a major driveline component that has a known history of failing. There is the argument that when overlanding you should not risk anything tricky that might lead to problems but my counter to that is I would like a truck I can trust should the unexpected happen.

Yes, I have put my money where my mouth is, my overland truck has genuine CVs fitted.
