Hello there guys.
The current strength of the Euro has prompted me to look at buying in
some equipment and stuff from non-EU countries - roof tent and a few
other bits and pieces.
Normally when you import from outside the EU you are hit with Import
Duty and VAT - depending on the classification of the goods, you could
be levied with charges of between 30% and 45% of the cost.
I've found a loop hole - in Ireland at least - but should be similar in
the UK and the rest of EU.
You can import goods with out incurring Import Duty and VAT under the
following circumstances:
(i) if the goods are being imported for a period not exceeding three
months; or
(ii) in particular situations having no economic effect.
Have written to the relevant government bodies and advised them that I
was planning on importing equipment to kit out an overland vehicle, that
I won't have the kit in the country for more than 3 months and that they
will have no economic effect during that period as the goods in question
are overlanding specific.
I've received positive written responses from the Revenue Commissioners
and will be pursuing this to conclusion.
May have to pay a deposit on the potential charges - refundable upon
exiting the country - kind of like a carnet.
Anyway - if you have the time, can be bothered and enjoy beating the
system - might be worth a whirl
