Smokin' ?

As some will know I have a replacement (2ndhand) engine (petrol) that has
been in now for a month or so and with no problems at all. It starts with
just a flick of the starter every time.
Recently I noticed smoke on start up, but not consistently so.
The car is parked on a slight downhill slope.
Sometimes on startup there is a lot more than just a puff of oily smoke -
there is actually a considerable amount of blue smoke that forms a cloud
behind the engine....other times none at all! The smoke smells mainly of
fuel but oily as well.
It hasn't used a drop of oil in the past month and the oil on the dipstick
still looks fresh, clear and new.
When warm/hot there is NO SMOKE on start up.
When cold there is more often SMOKE on start up than not.
When stood for a long time (24 hours or more) there is more often than not
NO SMOKE on start up from cold.
As I said earlier the truck runs very well and when following the truck on
the road I see no smoke other than on start up!
When idling the exhaust smells of nothing, no fuel or oil smell, no untoward
emissions of smoke or steam.
Thoughts anyone?
Pete

Hi Peter,
Oily smoke at startup from cold is often down to leaky valve stems -
you get a few drips of oil leaking from the valve stem that then gets
dumped into the piston on startup leading to the initial puff of smoke.
It could also be oily vapour from the block breather condensing in the
inlet manifold on cool down and running into the engine at startup,
although I'm not familiar with the inlet system on the petrol to be
able to check that one.
You should monitor it and see if it gets any worse, otherwise don''t
worry about it too much.
