Hey JB, nice to see you getting mechanical ;o)
Yes you can remove the front propshaft but put some witness marks on the flanges first before you do, so that you know how to put it back on again and in balance.
But unless you have freewheeling hubs you will not stop the diff rotating. I guess that as you have 'permanent 4WD' you have auto freewheeling hubs. In which case it will be advisable to check that the mechanism for them is working and they are disengaged. HTH
