Hi Christopher
Ok now I dont feel as happy as I did.
It just goes to show that when I assume I get the answers from the sellers
its impossible to beat the real knowledge like you have.
I will have to conceed and go out and beat myself with a wet towel.
It goes to show thinking you have all the info can be as bad as not having
any sometimes.
cheers

Well John
Up to you. However if you know anyone who has these already fitted (eg
BMW X5, Lexus, etc) ask to have a look when they turn them on: you will
see that while they do light up instantly, they continue to brighten for
a couple of seconds.
*Every* OEM HID installation I've seen leaves low beam running when main
beam is on, and this is also a point the DfT made in that article
discussing retrofits.
Of course this isn't an issue if the hi/lo effect is achieved by using
the same capsule and physically moving it, although I would worry about
the long term reliability of that system.
As for the "few minutes to fit" ... well, ask Julian when he has fitted
the kit, but from what I've seen the issues are:
- The base of a typical HID unit, especially H4 ones, is larger in
diameter than a standard H4 bulb. Therefore one would either have to
stretch or cut the rubber seal on the back of the lights. I would hate
to cut it and lose the waterproofing.
- If the wires on the light unit stick out a long way, and are fairly
rigid, they *might* foul the radiator expansion tank on the RHS.
Hopefully this would not be a problem.
- You have to locate the base unit (ballast) somewhere close to the
lights. Probably not a problem, although I'd like to get it somewhere
reasonably protected from water sloshing in from the front. Depending
on how robust the ballast unit was I might make some sort of housing for
it.
Nothing insuperable, but I suspect it would take me a few hours rather
than a few minutes to get it done right.
So far I've chickened out for a combination of the reasons above + cost,
but I'd be delighted to see what happens when someone tries it!

I'm not trying to depress you, really! I haven't done it myself (for
the reasons given) so all I was doing was citing the possible problems.
Truly - they are all solvable.
And since the *real* guru (Julian) is about to fit some I'd wait to see
what the outcome is.

Ok now the guys, John is our paddy with some questions and I am yours
frog with some too. I like wait for LED's lights to come out the
market because all ready Audi has them. But hear we say:
Don't we hear this some time now? When will Julien do it?

Hi Christopher,
I know it is a bit late but trying to catch up.
The big problem is fitting the ballasts as you have highlighted below.
Not a problem with the kit from Frogs.
Again not a problem.
I have located these inside the wings behind the side lights -
unfortunately the leads between the ballast and the light is short.
The other problem is the relays for supplying power to the ballasts -
haven't finalised where I am going to stick these.

Glad you got it done ... the $69,000 question though: what's the light
like?
Also does the dipped beam stay on with the main, or is that not an
issue?

For my relief wiring:
I got some sink waste pipe (white, plastic, about 1.5" dia, 99p/metre),
cut 2x 6" lengths, hammered some square section wood into them and baked
overnight at a low heat in the Aga to shape them to square(ish)
sections.
This made a nice fit for standard relays (approx 1" square), with space
for wires to run down (I had 2x relays each side, one above the other,
so the wires from the upper had to pass by the lower.)
I sealed the top end with silicone, but left the bottom with the wires
coming out open, on the principle that good drainage is better than
sealed but leaking, then wrapped the whole thing in black silage tape,
including the wires at the bottom exit.
They are attached inside the wings more or less where you've got the
ballasts, and fixed by plastic ties to the wiring conduit there (no
holes drilled).
They are close enough to the existing bulb sockets to make the extension
wiring short and neat, and the black silage tape makes them almost
invisible.
