Hi all I have a squeel from the engine when starting up from cold.lasts about a minute then goes off.goes off when engine is reved.have taken the air con belt off but squeel is still there.i have ajusted the alternator belt but is still there.the alternator is brand new less than a year old.so think it might be a bearing but is hard to pinpoint.could possibly be the water pump any idears.

Most likely to be a belt slipping, thats exactly what a loose belt sounds like. Probably the alternator one.

My new alt belt slipped for months no matter how i adjusted it so i used the old trick of mixing jam and sugar and rubbing the belt with it .

Just get a loud buzzing now with all the bees it attracts :) lol

 it works though it's just a natural adhesive that helps the belt bed in and eventually just gets washed away .

I have adjusted the belts as much as I can but still squeeling belts have been on truck for about a year.this is the first time I have had any slip.would new belts help.

Ah belts will squeal if too tight as well you know , if you don't like the jam idea you can buy belt dressing spray which does the same thing .

you need to see if your pulleys are worn, are they inline? Could it be a idler bearing that is making the noise? take the belt off and spin the pulleys to see i8f they are free moving abd silent. Also if this doesnt help spray so lub into each pulley 1 at atime and see if the noise stops then you will at least know whare the noise is coming from.

Thanks lads will take belts off and see if pullys are free.will try some lube to see if it is the belts that are squeeling.

Hi folks, been lurking a while so thought it about time I registered.

This sounds very similar to the "spring in the fuel pump syndrome" which I have suffered myself. I did the same replacing belts & looking at this & listening to that but all to no avail. I finally cured the problem but can't post a link to the article I found because I have less than 15 posts.

Basically there's a spring in the fuel pump that needs stretching. On top of the fuel pump you'll see a 14mm bolt head, unscrew this with care so not to lose the spring that sits underneath, remove spring, stretch spring by about 5mm, re-assemble.

The whole process takes about 5 minutes & although may not be your problem is definitely worth a try.

Many thanks to you folks who worked this one out!

I have also had the annoying squeal and was starting to think it was the water pump on its way out, or something more sinister/expensive. Then read about the above 'spring stretching' fix and set about it this morning. Hey presto - no more squeal.

Thank you so much. :icon-biggrin:

If you want to locate which belt it is drop some water on the individual belts and see when the noise goes away... Sometimes you can't help it and eventually it'll go away especially if it's a new belt, it'll settle in time. If it's an old belt, it may just need replacing.
