i think my starter is on its way out!

i'm not even going to ask how much for a new one from Toyota!

has anyone had their one re-wired?

if so how much did it cost? did it take long?

are there many used ones on the market?

I got a toyota recon alternator for the 120 for about half the price of a new one. Comes with Mr t warrenty so might be worth asking?

Could it not be brushes or contacts which need replacing? Cheaper and easier ?

when i turn the key i hear a click...a long pause
all the lights go out on the dash then all back to normal.

i can do this 6-10 times with no luck (sometimes it tries to start) then it will start.

I've had this, few years ago with my 4.7. Turned out to be the solenoid contact plates. They're only a couple of quid off fleebay.

The problem is NOT the starter motor in of itself. Mine went pop (and was re-conditioned) at 160,000. No, the problem with the starter motor is where it is located and the nightmare of getting it out. It was a bitch. Lucky for me, I had the job done in Wolverhampton......
