Afternoon, all,

I've been away awhile. Lots of other stuff going on. But back now with a big issue with my 1996, Sahara-spec, HDJ80R-GNMEX/1 HD-T in Zimbabwe. My lad bounced the front wheel of a rock at some speed over Christmas. He had to change a load of parts from the wheel back through the axle. Now it seems there is damage to the steering box too. I'm working on this from a long way away, based on pictures and descriptions, not being there myself. So I'm hoping that the gang here can help out.

First question - the image here is of the splines on the steering box. Are they meant to be like that or are they meant to be straight? I have found another steering box from an 93/auto, but it seems to be different - it has some kind of electric relay, and the splines are straight.

I hope you are all well in these strange and scrappy times. And I hope someone (or someseverals) can help me with this.

Looks like there's also a hairline crack here:

Bringer of bad news I'm afraid but the splines should be straight ....
Seemingly 80 series are prone to this shaft twisting or cracking if used hard off road .
The 105 series box uses an upgraded shaft and I believe if you order the old 80 series box part number from Toyota it supersedes to the 105 series box so you get the upgraded shaft .

I think @clivehorridge had this happen to his, maybe he can shed some light.
Edit : What he said :)

Yaaaaaa... I feared so. Somehow didn't look at all right. But - good news perhaps - is it possible to get just the shaft? Without having to buy the whole steering box assembly? I presume one needs a packet of seals and so on, but that a good fundi could take it apart and put it back again? I was a bit distressed to see that a new steering gear assembly is the fat end of two grand.

I knew there was someone who could help here! Max, my lad, replaced wheel bearings, knuckle, control arm, tie rod ends, and a bent axle. It must have been quite a bump.

An understatement I would say ;-) .....what ever he hit must have been solid .

Not sure about parts availability ..... if Toyota have superseded the full box it may be they no longer supply the shaft .... on the other hand there must be thousands of the original boxes still in service so why not ? probably best to do the seals at the same time ....

Quick look on internet and... Steering Boxes - [Leaving Land Cruiser Club] ;-)

Good S/H from Karl ?

yes, it is possible to just get the shaft.
ive sold a fair few uprated sector shaft kits over the years. a new pitman arm is also needed due to increased diameter. plus the seal kit.

Thanks, gentlemen. Good to know. Problem will be getting it from UK to Zimbabwe, given that I can't just jump on a plane and go home these days.

We have a good steering box from a knackered HDJ81, but I don't know if that will fit yet. Or if the shaft can be switched from one to the other.

There seems to be a problem with the website - when I click on usernames to see who is behind them I get a 'Oops we ran into a problem' message - looks like all the links to member names are broken. I presume 'Chapelgate' sells LC parts?

Right - really in the weeds now. Here are some pictures I was sent of the two steering boxes. The clean one is the damaged article from my vehicle. The dirty one is a possible transplant from a dead HDJ81. They appear to be very similar, though the HDJ81 item has some kind of electrical component attached.

My question - does anyone know if the unit from HDJ81 will fit on my HDJ80? According to the RoughTrax page here Reconditioned Exchange Power Steering Box with PPS - Land Cruiser 80 series - [Leaving Land Cruiser Club] - picture of the difference also attached - mine doesn't seem to have Progressive Power Steering, (unless component has been removed from it) and that may be the critical issue.

Thanks so much in advance for any thoughts, guidance, or warnings.

Best regards, Rob

Thanks buddy. I was editing my last when you wrote - to note that mine DOESN'T seem to have PPS, and the donor unit DOES have PPS - unlike how I wrote it the first time.

Encouraging news from you - thank you for that. Sure we'll find out how it all goes together as we get along with the job. I'll update here.
