Strange problem with warm engine

Dear All,
I have the following problem with my LC80. When the engine (1HF-FT) is
warm - for example when I drive with it for 2 hours on highway (120 -
140 km/h) and then i stop somewhere the rpm at idle are not constant but
they are jumping and the engine sometimes even stops. The problem is not
constant but I'm still wandering what is cosing it.
Yesterday I was driving for one hour and then I stopped and after
starting engine again there was a smoke coming from the exhaust which
is very unusual since it is not a smoky engine.
Since I'm planning new African winter trip with it I just want to be
sure that it the engine is in good shape.
Any ideas what might be the reason ? The fuel pump is a candidate in my
opinion but since this problem is not constant I'm not sure.

Hi Tomaz,
I don't know much about cruisers, could it be that the your radiator is
clogged with mud?
It could also be related to the Aircon, do you have the aircon on when this
is happening, could it be the aircon idler that is causing the issue?
Probably none of the above.... but you never know..

Hi Martin,
thanks for the answer ... the radiator is clean and I don't use aircon
at all although it is fully functional.
The thing is that it is not critical (at least for know) but I would
like to track it down to be sure.

Ok, I wonder if it's a fuelling issue like you say pump maybe?
Does it idle properly if you pump the fuel filter after being out on a long
journey.
Mines a diesel not sure about 1HD, I experienced something similar when I
bought my Cruiser (70 Series) and coming home from Nottingham to Berkshire.
When I turned off the motorway and got down to lower revs its started idling
weird and then stalled, it turned out to be a minute leak in the pipe that
comes out of the fuel tank, which was 20 quid replacement, although you have
to drop the tank which was not too bad a job really.
That brings me to another question, does it start on a dime from cold start
up? If it takes a good few turns then it may suggest a fuel in either the
fuel return pipe or the actual main feed or a leek somewhere, injectors,
fuel pump(diaphragm)?
Was the smoke white (probably would suggest not enough fuel and too much
air)?

The engine starts instantly even during the winter - no problem with
starting what so ever.
But the thing is that it is not constant - I can not reproduce the
problem every time so this would exclude leak in the pipe in my opinion
- and also below the car there are no oil, fuel leaks etc...
The smoke ... well it was more blue then white although I was not that
focused on the color.

Ok blue sound like oil burning :-(.
I have no idea I am afraid and will have to await one of the Guru's to

Hi martin,
regarding the color - i'm not really sure ... but the oil level is
constant and I'm quite sure I'm not loosing it since between regular
service intervals (10.000 km) I don't have to add any.

Sounds very like the problem I had/have.
Maybe like me, you dicounted fuel leaks, possible air suction.
As far as I can tell its the IP in some way.
Noboby who has looked at it can tell me what is wrong which is very
frastrating so I live with it.
Mine will like you say cut out when I stop at a toll plaza after high speed
for a while.
It will however start but the rev count does jump quite a bit at times.
However I also have a lot of vibration when the revs drop which cannot be
compansated by adjusting the idle screw, which you dont seem to have.
And like yours the symptoms will come and go, so very hard to narrow it
down especially when you get it checked and it wont act up with the
mechanic.
So I did not get the IP checked and had it over hauled a few times by
different guys who cant fix the problem.

Hi John,
it looks to me that we have exactly the same problem - maybe the reason
is different but at least the symptom's are the same.
I also get a lot of vibrations when the rpm are jumping ...
I'm thinking of getting IP checked but on one hand it is not cheap and
on the other there is no guarantee that the problem will be solved ...
as in your case.
