Sudden loss of power steering - help urgence!

Hello the guys and Renate,
Well I am back here after loosing so much data under computer change.
My 80 is almost finiish now with new block but after test drive
suddenly the steering is so hard - no power steering. So we check
fusible for that steering speed sensitor and it is OK.
Then we get smarter than monkey and we test volts that going to
steering box to work electrovane and there is only 6 volts. I think
that is too little volts but we have not manual for power steering.
What you think?
So maybe you can help us diagnoste why no more power steering? The
pump is drive by cascade of gears, not drive belt.
Benoit

Hello Benoit,
the same hapend to me on Monday so I know how it feel.
I have noticed that the engine had problems when the steering wheel was
in the end position - then I went to Toyota garage to solve the problem
and my pump died on their parking lot.
You are right - there is no drive belt.
In my case the pump was obvious candidate so they removed the pump and
opened it. It was in bad shape with the metal parts in contact. Surface
of the metal parts was damaged so we had to inspect the entire steering
oil line for possible small metal parts (i don't know the English name
for that).
The result was in my case - new pump.
The good news is that the separate parts for the pump are available in
the toyota part catalogue.
Best regards,
Tomaz

Interesting.
I don't have any stalling or other pump issues... but my LC has recently
developed a steering fluid leak from the pump area. It's not major, the
fluid level drops about 2 - 3mm on the dipstick per 200 miles of driving.
I can't see where the leakage is coming from because it doesn't seem to leak
at idle. But without fail if I go for a longish drive there's ATF
everywhere.
Is there anywhere obvious on the pump where a leak might appear?
How much is a new steering pump? Does anyone know?
Pete

Hi Pete,
unfortunately :) I can tell you the exact price for the pump: 780 EUR.
Regards,
Tomaz

Ouch!
Worth considering secondhand?

Hi Pete,
if you can get one ... I was trying hard without success. We have many
shops which can rebuild your pump but at least the housing must be in
good shape which was not the case with my pump.

Often the problem isn't it?
Was it difficult to remove the pump? What's involved in removing it?

Hi Pete,
at toyota garage they told me that I'm the first one with such a problem
...
Regarding pump removal - my skills are really poor so I'm leaving that
to the mechanic who was not complaining much - if this is of any info to
you :)
I think they usually charge one hour labor for dismounting and one and
the half to put it back.

Hi Benoit
So sorry to hear about your troubles with the steering.
Your luck is very bad just like mine.
I can only think maybe there is an interruption of power to the steering.
It happened to me when the engine stalled a few times I broke down, so maybe
the pump which the engine drives is damaged.
As for the leak peter, its usually a seal problem and you can get the seals
but then you need to get the steering box in and out etc.
Mine has leaked for years and tried the stop leak which did not work.
So tried some brake fluid in the mix and it seems to be working but dont
know about the long term.
The theory is the brake fluid expands the seals a little ,so we shall see.

Hi John
It's my steering pump that's leaking, not the box.
Anyone know the removal procedure for the steering pump please?

Has anyone fitted a third party steering pump to an 80?
Just a random thought but there is a spare v-groove on the crank pulley so a
separate belt driven pump should be easily fittable??

I'm just about to replace my powersteering pump- I am hoping that it can be
repaired though as it's not totally gone, it's just groaning and not
supplying proper flow and pressure. It's got a whole lot worse since off
roading it though!
How does a speed sensitive box appear different to a standard box, and as I
have a 93 UK 80 series what would I likely have?

Hi Peter,
Leaks from the power steering pump is quite common and is usually just a case of replacing the rubber seal on the fluid inlet pipe at the bottom and the copper seals on the high pressure outle

Sorry sent the last message too soon.
You also need to replace the copper seals on the high pressure banjo bolt outlet at the top.
Whilst at it I tend to actually remove the pump (two 14mm nuts) and check the drive gear, blow out the pipes to flush the oil and clean it all up, making it easier to pin point future leaks.

That's worth a try.
Are the seals Toyota only?

Found it, thank you Chris. I didn't even think to look in the chassis
manual.

The seals are standard size rubber or copper seals - I started just getting them from the multi packs you can get from the likes of screwfix.

Thanks Julian
I'll pop into Screwfix tomorrow then. Shame, as I walked straight past their
door today.

I got a full steering pump rebuild kit with all the seals (seem to remember there are 2 or 3 inside the pump) off ebay (roodogs is the seller in Australia).
Easy to get the pump off and put it back on, hardest bit is getting the cog off the front to be able to split the pump apart.
Think the seal kit cost around 40 pounds.
