Many thanks to Julian for the excellent assistance with my suspension
swap today.
About 4 hours total work time to swap springs, shocks and steering damper.
The new OME suspension is nothing short of superb on the road;
comfortable, not too harsh and not too supple with very positive
roadholding.
Many thanks also to TBR (www.tbruk.com) for their courteous and helpful
staff, and for very quick delivery.
Pete

Hey Pete
Glad you got sorted with your bits. There is no comparison to the original
one at all now is there.
It must have been one of those days. The weather was really great so
CruiserMik and myself changed my birfield and some seals. Now Im much
happier with my Trip to France comuing up soon and all that driving that has
to be done, better with a new Birfield than an old worn one. At least now I
wont be wondering how far it will get, now I know It will do. Is there
somewhere in the UK that I can get the 54mm hub socket, I have not looked
yet just thouth Id ask while I was here.

Hi John
It's a big relief to have it sorted for sure. There is no comparison,
especially as the original suspension was totally shot - just ask Julian!
I can get 54mm sockets but they're not cheap and I'm not at all sure
that mine will fit as it has a fairly thick sidewall. Julian will know.
When is your trip, and which way are you going through the UK?

I am going down from Hollyhead to Dover and then on the way back Im going
from Dover to Newport and then back to Hollyhead. at least thats the plan,
but when you add in all the getting lost bits, the O I thought it would take
less time bits, the this is long bit, the we should be there by now, not
again bit. We will see. Ill have a search for the Hub Nut and see what comes
up.

Hi John,
I would need to check your model, but the 55m 3/4" socket by Draper will fit
early models, however for later models you do need a thin walled socket
because the Draper won't fit in the hub.
At the moment I am using an old fashioned box style spanner, but have a
pretty good idea of the amount of torque required to do it by hand. If you
aren't you really do need to try to get a proper socket and set the toque
properly.
Snap-on do one (part No: ANS1900B) for not much money, but the problem is
whether they can get one in stock for you.
Alternatively there is always the Aussie guy on ebay that you found the
other day.

Hi All
Despite searching all over the net I cannot find a supplier of Eibach Springs. I called the UK sales office and they stopped making them 4 years ago. Just not a volume market for them!
Any other options???
Bilsteins are not cheap are they?? Well over =A3100 per shock and they give a two year warranty so they had better be good for that price.
All the best

They probably won't help you much because there's no market in the UK
for Eibach springs fitting Landcruisers

Hi Roman
Great research. Would not have thought to look in France! I do not
read or speak French but can figure out most of the site.
Will investigate.

Hi All
Finally got around to replacing the knackered rear shocks this weekend.
Took too long to finish the rears so did not manage to get the fronts
done as well but the transformation is amazing. Originals with 167k on
them are dead with nearly no oil left and well rusted and the springs
were blistered and merrily rusting away. Followed the Sleeoffroad guide
and it was relatively straight forward. What made it take so long was
my fear of getting properly under the car so I was very careful when
pushing the shocks into place (drive is on quite an incline and even
with the wheels propped and 2 major 6 ton axle stands I still respect
her too much to go right underneath) when she's jacked up. Only concern
is that I managed to scratch the coating on the springs a bit during the
install so have to figure how to re coat them with something to stop the
rust now that they are on the car!
The difference is very noticeable! Backend has far more control and
feels safer when pushed hard over bumpy bends. Over a big bump the
backend lurches less and then the rebound is controlled with only one
little jump. Compared to the wallowing and lurching ride I had before
this is brilliant. The new setup is OME springs (Froggies at the best
price I could find) with Bilstein shocks (Proven Products at an equally
good price!)
All the best

Simon,
What part numbers front rear did you use for the springs and shocks?
When you have the fronts in place let us know how much the ride height
has changed, if you did not measure it before just quote the bumpstop
clearance.
Thanks, Gareth Jones.

Hi Gareth
The springs are OME 861 FR OME 851 RR
Shocks are Bilstein B46 1477 FR/B46 1478 RR
Didn't measure ride height for the rear but it feels slightly lower than
stock? Will measure the fronts before I start and again once finished.
All the best

Hi Simon,
Best bet is to use some paint like one of the Hammerite range or try to
find some that will also allow for some flex.

Hammerite! Good plan but will it stick to the plastic coating as well
as all the grease and oil that came off my grubby gloves whilst
struggling to get the springs on???
All the best

Well done!
I am exactly the same Simon. I am terrified of crawling under any vehicle
that's not supported by it's wheels! It could be held up by 10 axle stands
and I'd still not do it!
I'm also terrified of heights!
Cowards of the world unite eh?

Hi Peter
Better a coward than a pancake so tell me about it.
I jack the car up, put two stands per side and then push the wheel under
the car just in case and I still will not get under the car!!!
All the best

Hi Simon,
I would have thought that it will stick to the powdercoating, but I
would try to clean them off first.
I have never undertood why they powdercoat springs, because it doesn't
last, getting brittle and chipping off pretty quickly.
I would have thought you should be able to find some paint that will do
the job as well as be reasonably flexible.

Hi Guys
Ok I understand that the springs look good when new and all nice and clean,
but they never stay that way.
I may need another lesson in this but what difference does a bit of rust
make on a spring as large as the cruisers.
It is after all only surface rust and would need a lot of time to corrod to
any degree to have that spring fail would it not.
Waiting to be corrected.
