Do you mean a Morris Minor or a cat Stu? If the former was the noise you refer to big ends, first gear or back axle. I don't remember an overwhelming intake noise .

I think he means something more German and truck shaped Frank.

Its a funny intake noise sounds not heard it before cant describe it very well either to be honest.

It was the engine driven compressor, it takes it's feed from the pipe between the air filter and carb. Disconnected now so the intake noise is more normal.
