I'm a big fan of the genuine steel Toyota trays. My boss has one on his 79 and its so solid! 
The alluminium ones are good in that you gain access from the sides and there nice and light, but they feel so flimsy and weak!
IMHO a complete custom tray is the way to go if you intend on converting a vehicle for over landing. I particularly like the ones that have the telescopic/fold down legs so the whole thing can easily be fitted and removed, when not on trips.
