tools needed for front drive shaft replacement

What tools did you use when you worked on your front axle on your
beast?
I have some but don't know exactly what extra tools I would need for
the drive shaft replacement.

Hi Renate,
This is a rough list from memory:
Good metric socket set
Good metric spanner set
In theory a 54mm thin walled deep socket, but you can get around it
using a cold chisel.
Torque wrench
Breaker bar for socket set.
Brass drift/hammer
Seal puller
Inner bearing puller - these are very rare and expensive - I have one,
but have managed to knock out the bearings with a decent punch
(assuming you are replacing them at the same time.
Lots of rags/paper towels
a range of screwdrivers
A file to flatten the ends of the circlip on the end of the birfield.
Flat bladed pliers
Are you planning on doing it yourself?

Thank you for the list of tools.
Like always I'm unsure.
It will be the first time I've done anything like this and to be quite
frank I'm not that confident on my expertise.
Actually, I'm pretty much scared, and probably won't have the physical
strength if physical strength is needed.
I had thought I could have a go myself, but actually, probably not.
I've been thinking about it for a while now, mulling it over in my
mind, over and over again. I think the answer to that question is not,
and I don't think I can do it myself.

There's nothing that needs much strength Renate. If I recall correctly
the hardest part on mine is always undoing the brake calliper bolts, and
that's not too hard.
Each time I've tackled a new job on my LC I've had doubts about my
competence for the job but usually find if I take my time it's all very
simple and straight forward.
I always drift the bearing race out without problems, there are cut outs
in the hub to make this a simple job.
Best Regards,
Jon.

Hi Renate,
When the weather improves (it's snowing hard here and we already have
2") you are welcome to come up here one weekend and we can tackle it
together.
What exactly needs doing?

Its replacing both drive shafts and associated seals and such.
I thought the initial problem was the CVJ's and I have two new ones of
these already available. These might not need replacing, but I need to
see a close-up of the wheels, to see for myself, as the CVJ's might need
replacing, at a guess.
Then it became apparent that the drive shafts themselves may need
replacing too, 'May' being the appropriate word.
Either way all the necessary bits (if it all goes to plan, and doesn't
go horribly wrong) will be available by the end of this week. They're
being delivered here, to my workplace (since I'm never at home...).
I anticipate there being delays, and my [realistic] worry is that these
"horribly wrong" things will be found out when the axle is already in
bits....
I'm extremely grateful to you Julian, thank you so much, and since you
have already worked on your front axle, and know what is involved, I was
thinking of asking you anyway - in fact I thought of this at the very
beginning when the CV query first became apparent, but I didn't know how
to phrase the question.... And it is times like this when I really do
appreciate you lot!
Its snowing here too (well, its a lame excuse for snow! because there
isn't much of the white stuff available for playing in, and anyway, it
melts so quickly).
Kindest regards
Renate

Hi Jon,
True, I have done that, but have also seen some hubs that have been really
badly scored by someone trying to drift it out and it makes it a lot
harder to put a new one back in.

OK, we can sort something out when you get your stuff.
I need to crack open my front axle on the new LC at some point - I am
getting some very minor clicking from the CVs, but think that I can
probably get away with just swapping them over (left to right and vice
versa) and regreasing.
It is a very messy job, but we should be able to do it in a day.
What about your wheel bearings and seals - how are they?
Actually why not pop up beforehand so that I can take a look at it so
see if anything else like the wheel bearings, seals, etc need doing.

Hi Renate,
Don't worry, I try to make it a rule not to do office work on the weekends
leaving time for family and now the shooting season is over working on the
LC and other vehicles.
First thing this Sunday around 9.30 may be good - I may be going out to
lunch - if not any time. Next weekend is trickier.
P.S. Still after your box of assorted goodies!
