Top Gear - North Pole in Hilux

Hi,
Did any of you see Top Gear last night when they did a race to the
North Pole with Richard Hammond on a dog sled and Clarkson and May
driving a tricked up Hilux?
If you didn't, well worth looking for a repeat of it.

I did - I wanted the dog sleigh to win...though I kinda knew JC and JM would
beat the dogs - unfair, because the dog sleigh didn't have 4wd backup...

I thought it was interesting that they chose a diesel running on a
"mixture of diesel and Avgas". For fuel economy I suppose. And I was
surprised that they didn't have a winch fitted.
Nothing, not nohow, not nowhere, would persuade me to drive a 3 ton
truck over 8 inches of ice!!
I wonder if they got the idea from Edmund Hillary's Antarctic expedition
in which, among other things, he drove a Ferguson T20 tractor to the
South Pole. He had rudimentary tracks fitted though: see

Well, you can't! cor blimey! what was it?, "2,200 gbpounds for one tyre!
bit steep, but well, it did work
Colour was nice too - but I'd have to go for a brilliantly vivid flourish of
colour on my version!
How's Hippo?
l'beast is okay apart from the UJ joints...and a puncture in my LRFT -
methinks I'll have to have the tank taken out, emptied of all possible
vagrant diesel fumes, and welded...don't know what else to do with it
Cheers

I think Avgas is similar to paraffin and would thin diesel for cold temps,
but then why not use some petrol as they do in Russia, imagine they had
heaters anyway. Or will avgas work in a compression ignition engine?
Anyone experience with propane / gas injection on Diesels? Said to be quite
effective at reducing emissions, increasing mileage etc..
Of topic a little but I read that Cessna now have a diesel plane, think it's
the little two seater, single engine type, supposedly reduced fuel cost was
the reason they made it!

I suspect they used something more like JP4 (or is it 5?) - kerosene that doesn't wax at low temps, not Avgas.

Ask the Ozzies on LCOOL. The Aus government is giving them a subsidy of around $2000 to add LPG injection to diesels, so quite a few have done it. Most seem to think that you need to inject a little bit of oil with the gas to keep the valves happy, and head life may be a problem.
I priced it up here: about =A31800 to fit the kit, and "up to" 30% fuel saving means that it simply isn't economic for anything smaller than a bus/lorry. Also there is the problem of where to locate the LPG tank - not an issue if you've hung your spare on the back as you can fit a toroidal tank, but mine is still underneath.
I was in Dijon last week and all the buses there are LPG powered, with big signs on the side saying how much cleaner this is ("on peut respire..."). Certainly they didn't emit any smoke.

Like the WWII Focke-Wolf Condor? I should think increased range would be a big selling point.

I wonder what sort of percentage LPG they are running - 30% fuel saving is
quite a lot, reason I ask is during by discussions with the ECO manufacture
he mentioned they are making an LPG/Petrol ECU and also gas injection for
diesels.

Well, we can all dream, when I win the lottery eh! The Hippo is going well,
but unfortunately not stopping too well, ABS problems. Apart from that all
is fine. Sorry to hear about your tank, how did that happen? Fill the tank
with water, that will remove the fumes, but don't forget to dry it
thoroughly afterwards.

Cher Benoit
Just an accent, that is, a way sometimes we may describe something - its
meant not to be a serious - cor blimey is an expression that is regional
accent - what I was saying was that it is incredible something like a tyre
can cost this much - but it is a specialised tyre, so for specialism, it
costs money.

Salut Benoit
Just to correct Renate, =8CCor Blimey=B9 is a euphemism, a saying, derived from
the english expression =8CGod Blind Me=B9. Can=B9t be sure but it was first
recorded in about the mid 18th c. and in it=B9s day was the equivalent of a
very offensive swear word, particularly for Catholics. It isn=B9t regional
accent but most of us associate it with working class Londoners, Cockneys
although its use was I believe widespread over the country.
Bon journee

OK I "get it now"! Cor blimey is like saying Altenarschlochstein hear in
Alsace which mean "butt cheeks hole of stone on that old guy" in English.
I laugh more when my 'ricain colleague come back to work tomorrow. Thanks
