OK, I think I have the chain stretch issue in the T box. Clack clack on releasing the clutch...

I need the truck for a few days, can't repair or replace in the meantime. Drive on or take out the front propshaft and lock the diff?

Any advice appreciated

Bob

If it is the chain it will be fine to drive . The loose chain in the mrs transfer was never fixed because without trying to we both learned to drive it in a manner that makes the problem completely unnoticeable . Its a subconscious thing so hard to explain I don't know if its timing or perhaps we just let the clutch out a fraction slower ?

Thanks for the reply Shayne. I popped out after dinner and took off the front prop to be on the safe side until I can get a few days to troubleshoot properly. Having a 'mare of a week, Ford sat down coming home today, 10mph tops. Thought the cruiser was all in good shape but started hearing this yesterday.. Have a car bought to replace the Ford but delays getting it to me... typical

I actually bought a used transfer box years ago so at least I'd have some spares on hand if I found the problem , must be buried in the shed somewhere ?

I'm thinking I might go that route. Breaker not far away has 2 listed. Mostly they end up in breakers yards here because of chassis rot, so chances are one would be good.

The cumulative effect of 374,000 miles and a heavy right boot? I did have a lower than ideal level of oil in the T box last time I did a fluid change.. probably didn't help.

I did post a vid on here once of a guy who just removed a couple of links from the chain , something i did plenty of times as a kid on bicycles and I really don't see why it can't be considered a permanent fix .

OK, well I drove it this morning without without the front prop and it's not overly happy. Rumbling kind of vibration at anything over 40mph.. I wonder could the rear diff be causing a problem? Still some popping noises but hard to hear from the cabin.

I'm beginning to suspect that the chap I enlisted a couple of years back to to the diff oils when he was welding the chassis may have neglected to do so.

Greased the other day, but I may pop the rear shaft and have a look.

Found a foul UJ, clicking when I move it by hand.. grabbed a few from the local parts man, tow truck man kindly stopped when bringing the Ford home! I'll stick em in in the morning and see how we go. I'm not sure its only that but I have hope to cling to while having a topsy-turvy week!

OK... hands up.. it was the UJs. Replaced on both front and rear props and it's driving like new. No noises, no rumbling, and one conclusion jumped to without the need. The rear one wasn't great either, so obviously when I greased them last week it awakened the weakness in them and the noises began

Normally I'm better at deduction but it's been a stressful week.

Noflw off to replace my leaking hot water tank in the house.... yep its been one of those

Thanks for the replies Shayne. Helps clear the head of intrusive thoughts.

Aye when the pressure is on we always look for worst case scenario first and its good to talk because even the wrong answer helps us shuffle through our own thoughts to find the right answer

Oh and are you 100% sure the dog didn't take a sneaky leak by the water tank

No that one I'm sure about. Luckily the cruiser is back running and I can collect a new tank and fit it tomorrow. Such days are there to give grey hairs and a boring story to annoy your mates with
