turbo, steering box

Hi Guys
I have been offered a turbo from a 94 and a steering box.
I am having issues with oil consumption which may point to the turbo as it
has dione 220,000 without any work on it, and will know soon enough.
My steering box has been leaking for ever and seems to be leaking more as
time goes by and have tried the usual Lucas fix which is not working after 3
bottles.
Would it be easier and cheaper to get the box for the ?150 and have a guy
fit it or to go down the route of buying the seal kit and having somebody
take the old one out fit new seals and then refit.
I ask cause as usual i dont know what is involved in this.
The turbo is ?100 and the steering box is ?150.
Is the turbo worth that money or am I setting myself up for more pain as I
dont know the condition of that one either.
Can you get a kit for the turbo or am I in need of some more strong
medication again.
I just dread the cost of labour leaving the cruiser into these specialist
rip of shops who can charge what they want really and I just stand there
saying I hate you and know im being ripped off but I have to pay.
cheers

Hi Guys
Been asking a little about turbos from dealers and guys who are selling .
And all want to sell surprise surprise but first I have to ask.
Is it worth buying a used turbo off another 80 series.
Anyone have an idea whet the life span is for these turbos.
Would it simply be a case if the mileage was normal or low on the doner
vehicle then the turbo would be good.
All American do one but its costly, and they do the inside componants of one
but asked for me to check the waste gateand other bits for cracks etc,
imagine asking me to do that.
It would appear there is no kit available for the turbos unless someone else
knows different.
cheers

John, a secondhand turbo might be ok - on the other hand it might not be.You will not know for sure unti it is fitted. You may not get your money back for a faulty turbo and even if you did you would not get your labour costs back, plus the vehicle is off the road for longer.
Life span - how long is a piece of string - it depends on the type of oil used, the frequency of oil and filter changes. Does the driver give the vehicle some stick and not allow the tubo to slow down before switching off. Hence mileage is no indication of condition.
All American do a quality product but it costs ! You would get piece of mind.
Incidentally is it an exchange service or buy direct?
I think you have a faulty seal in the turbo. Post a question on the lscool site and ask if seals / repair kits are available and has anyone done the job.
If your man is panicking about changing the brake discs this would fry his brains.
I think you need an uninterupted full week over here in the workshop.
Regards Gareth.
BTW - I will be away from this address until Wednesday next week.
you can e-mail me at [Email address removed] or phone.

Hi Guys
Just wondering if anyone know where or if you can get a seal kit for the
steering box. I have tried Milner and they will do an exchange but that
means a lot of down time for me which I would prefare not to have to do..
cheers

Hi John,
Will they take full payment on a card, then credit you back when you send on
your old unit?
I've seen various car parts companies doing that.

John,
A S/H turbo needs to be checked for hair cracks in the housing and
play in the bearings. Basically, both tests can be done with the turbo
on the bench if you know how.
Changing the oil seals, or even the bearings, is not a big deal but
needs some skill not to upset the balance of the turbine shaft. That's
why there are turbo specialists selling reconditioned units. If you
buy a used one, at least have it checked by a turbo specialist, but
then wouldn't it be easier in the first place to buy a S/H turbo from
him, including his warranty?
