Updating your Alternator

With so many of you bolting on lots of electrical goodies for your
overlanding trips, have any of you looked at upgrading your alternator?
I've always had the impression that the factory alternator was pretty
good as standard and could cope with most requirements so have never
considered upgrading it, but have just been asked about this by someone
so would be interested in other people's views.

Mine has a 90 amp alternator on, I dont think upgrading is needed.

Is that written on it somewhere? I've always been curious about the

Yes theres a label on, difficult to get to, I held a digital camera in
there and took a pic of the label. This was inside the front wheel
arch.

Hi,
Mine is 100A - so far so good, but wait till the 4x100W Lightforce
lamps on the roofrack are fired (in addition to the 2x100W on the
front bumper). At idle speed, I don't think the alternator will cope
with all the loads switched on.

My main beams (400w total) dim slightly at idle - it needs about 1000
rpm for full brightness. But then every car I've ever owned has done
this.
Supplementary question - what do you need all that light for? T. Rex
hunting? Accelerating the earth's spin by the emission of tangentially
directed photons?

Your alternator puts out max output at about 1000 revs. Your
lights are only pulling 50. If you idle the output drops but your
batteries are assisting the alternator so you have a few hours. At
more than 1000 revs your alternator will cope. If you have 90/100 amp
batteries then they will run your Six lights for Four hours without
the engine running. Put a light across a battery one day to see how
long it takes to flaten it, they take ages.

AFAIK it's supplied by Toyota. Check Nippon Denso Part Number
27060-74180-84. It went straight in.

That's a lot of fire power and hope you don't mind me saying, probably a bit
over the top. I've never been convinced by roof mounted lights because of
reflection probs on the bonnet but I know people who go wading at night
that use them. I avoid deep water as much as is possible but that is another
story. Be interested to know how often they get used on your trip.

If you did, you'd be amazed how very little you can see with the
forward pointed headlamps. And the lack of ground features causing
distorted sense of distance adds another interesting dimension to the
whole experience. That's why wide angle illumination helps, and my
roof lamps are just for that - wide angle.

As it happens I have driven over dunes in the dark and understand the idea
of higher angle illumination. I haven't got these high lamp0s, never had
them on any previous cars so may well be missing out. I guess the only way
to find out is to try. I may investigate not until other things have been
taken care of... And it all takes money...

windscreen which is worse than on the bonnet - we were trying to source
sun shade for it, but couldn't find one in time.
I think he ended up using masking tape to blank off the lense.

Interesting. I remember as a kid in Kenya, on a farm, we had constant
problems with rustlers (I kid you not) stealing beef and dairy cattle. My
father mounted a barrage of additional lights on the roof of our slightly
battered Cruiser (many moons ago now) and they were great if you were
stationary but hopeless on the move as reflection, refraction etc etc just
made it impossible to see. He ended up mounting two work lamps on custom
welded stalks, about the height of the roof but mounted on the front wings.
Looked ridiculous and both eventually got trashed driving through the bush
but great while they lasted - long enough to put the cattle thieves off.
