Hi Guys
I have a nice little one here for you lot to get your teeth into. Fot the
last few years I have had intermitent trouble with a vibration from the
engine.
This is how it works or does not work which ever it is. Every few months for
no reason that I know ,that says a lot , anyway the cruiser goes through
this stage of vibrating a lot and I mean a lot. The small lever with the H,
N, L on it feels like it will jump out of the cruiser window. This vibration
is from the engine when it is at idle and in gear its worse but it does it
when not in gear and at idle aswell. It is a very intense vibration enough
to rattle my two brain cells together which is not good and can be heard
like the engine is not well at all. This will go on for a month or a little
longer ten this heavy vibration will dissapear altogether and the engine is
back to its normal hume. If looked at when the bonnet is up the engine looks
like it will vibrate off what ever holds it there. Then as soon as it came
it will go and as you guys know I would not have done anything to help it
other than look and listen. I have tried to get someone to look at it but
its one of these things that when someone who might know whats wrong is
there it will not do it, its like it laughing at me. I would think that its
not bad because it comes and goes and the engine feels fine otherwise.

As you might it is very difficult to isolate things like that.
Things to consider, and perhaps log as and when you get the vibration:
Does it happen throughout the rev range?
Does it vary as the vehicle warms up?
Is there any relationship between the vibration and the fuel being
used?
Is there any relationship to the vibration and the condition of the air
and fuel filters (does it continue after a service?

Sounds like a mis-fire or not firing on one or more cylinders. Are you
sure it pulls normally when it's vibrating?

When you say "engine" I assume you have excluded all other things
because it happens also when the vehicle is stationary.
The engine may behave like this because it's not firing on all
cylinders. Why this is happening is another matter. A simple test to
simulate such conditions is to slightly undo the nuts (one by one) on
the high pressure fuel pipes (on the injectors), just enough to see
fuel squirting . Normally, engine revs should drop a bit. If they
don't, this means that cylinder is not firing properly.

Have you had the injectors serviced and pump checked?

Hi All
Newbie here. Proud owner of a '94 Turbo D 4.2L 80 with 155k happy miles on
the clock.
I too get a vibration that comes and goes whilst idling at traffic lights,
but this then goes away once the engine is revved. However it is
particularly bad when facing up a steep hill the garage say it is worn
engine mounts but as I rarely sit for long periods of time on steep hills
with the engine idling I haven't worried about it too much. Do these engine
have harmonic balance shafts because if so it could be that one is faulty.

Welcome to the list!
Harmonic balancer - it is the pulley that sits on the crank shaft
nose. They have a history of spectacular failures - check elsewhere
on this list and on the Birfield list. I don't think the balancer
could be the cause of such violent vibrations, though.
Engine mounts - if the engine runs normal it doesn't vibrate a great
deal, but it will when thrown out of balance by misfiring. Here the
mounts do play a part.
In your case, too, I would think it's rather down to a problem with
fule delivery.

You could be right about the fuel delivery.
As well as the vibration very occasionally I have also had one of those
unrepeatable issues with engine/drive train vibration/groaning/whirring
noises that comes from underneath the car, drivers side I think, that goes
once the car is driving along and so took it to the garage who could not
find anything wrong and then gave up took the car home and guess what it did
it again. Checked fluids etc nothing obvious so will keep an eye on it.

Hi Guys
Thanks on this one aswell. Just a little more info for you.
It only does it at idle and behaves perfect at all other rev ranges both
when stoped and driving.
It drives very well with out any problems at all.
It makes no difference if it cold or warm once at idle it will do it.
I dont know about the fuel consumption when its playing games like this.
It has a new fuel/air and service last month.
The fuel pump and injectors were replaced four years ago.
If it is a cyclinder not working what needs to be done, only curious thats
all im not even thinking it is, well maybe.
The vibration goes completely after a few weeks, and its back to normal.

What RPM does it idle at?
Does it make any difference whether it is in Drive, Neutral or Park?
