Was Gear Box but now Ireland

l'beast failed its MOT - gearbox didn't engage reverse on a couple of
occasions. The guy who is doing the autogearbox (when I can afford it) is a
guy who defected from Toyo Main Dealer here in North Bristol. He used to
work on l'beast at the Toyo garage - a rare breed, a toyo mechanic who knows
his stuff! and he doesn't charge the earth (other garages do the
swift-intake-of-breath-thing with a finger in the corner of their mouths -
and make out its a serious thing, so bad in fact that l'beast will
imminently fail spectacularly)
The company who are doing it is an autogearbox specialist, I've used them
before they seem kosher. I've asked for further quotes but haven't got them
so unless I can find someone to do it cheaper than ?1800 than this is what
I'll have to pay.
Drives fine in all other gears - what the problem is is it has a bit of wear
and tear and the teeth do not engage the (don't know the technical term)
sprocket/clutch/gear?? for reverse inside the box.
I have taken it seriously off-road before the problem became apparent - even
as far back as 2001 in Algeria and Libya.
So its still taken out - which reminds me, do you live anywhere near Dublin
or Belfast? there are two jobs I'm after, one at a museum and what at
Queens in Belfast. Been thinking about relocating.
cheers

Hello there Renate
What's the story with the gear box. Be sure and let me know what the
problem was & how they fixed it.
Who's doing the work for you on it. Were they recommended??
Cheers

Is yer man doing a complete overhall for the 1800 - or just fixing the
reverse.
As for Ireland - if you go to Dublin you might as well leave L'beast at
home - GRIDLOCK - second only to Delhi. I took a job in Cork to get away
from it. That said - it's a great place to party. I(f going to Dublin
I'd get an apartment within walking distance of the Job & pub.
Re Belfast - your guess is as good as mine but cost of living would be
cheaper than Dublin....
Cheers

Yup, the whole shebang - out with the gearbox (in pieces...) and complete
overhall - well, that's what he said, and I tend to believe him, although I
would say, I still think 1800 GBpounds is a mite stiff, but then, who am I
to judge? I have no real idea how much these things cost anyway.
Seriously? surely no GRIDLOCK in Dublin?
Walking distance for pub + job - definitely!
Regards
Renate

Hi Renate,
When I bought my current 80 a couple of years ago, I was quoted about ?3500
for a new auto box.
