what 4x4 for a 21 year old?

My son got a hilux double cab at 20 with just 1 yrs no claims. Initial quotes were £3.5k but we got this down to £1.5 with some haggling. Lots of insurers deemed it a commercial vehicle and wouldnt insure anyone under 25. A bit of aggro but worth it in the end. A 2.5 but its been great for 2 yrs.

Thanks for all the input. Ive pointed him in the direction of this thread.
a couple of gems I'd forgotten about in the four trax and mighty 2.8 short wheelbase pajero. Even though ive been in both as separate friends had them..
jimnys are to small as he wants something to lugg his drums about in!
he cant stretch to the purchase cost of a decent 80 which would be his first choice.
i favour the surf, great for kipping in too.
dont want him forgetting how to drive though with the automatisch gear box..
ill update once he's got something.

L200 (original shape) not a bad bet, given the requirements. Pick them up for nothing and the 2.5 is a decent motor (2.8 is more problematic)...
