fancying some steel wheels and some muds for the winter adventures down here
would like to buy some decent 17'' steel rims

who makes good steel wheels out there?

Got mine from these guys http://www.extremeoffsetwheels.com/ must be over 2 years ago , they are starting to show signs of age but a blast with a pressure washer every 6 months is not the best way to care for them

Cooper discoverer stt , they later released the st max which are said to be stronger lighter and all things to Everyman which to my suspicious mind stinks of marketing spiel for cheaper to produce and more profitable , could be wrong of course but it would be interesting to hear a review from someone who has used both .

If you are purely interested in mud \ clay performance then it is hard to ignore the Simex Extreme Trekker tread pattern. There are lots of clone tyres that use the same pattern.

Running 1 Bar on steep descents, if you're relying on plenty of steer around trees and the like, with added undulations, beadlocks will reduce the chances of rolling the outside edge of the tyre (usually on steer) off or out of the bead seal.

I don't do too much "extreme" stuff, but I've still been caught out even when not aired down.

Beadlock rims make balancing a nightmare.

100% off-road trucks don't care to much because speeds are low, but if you intend running them on the road (which I presume you do), find yourself a conscientious tyre fitter who's prepared to pay some particular attention to balancing them.

It's not impossible, and there are methods of balancing other than lead weights, such as using balancing beads in the tyre, it can be done.

At the AO show there were some very nice split rims that employ a large rubber sleeve round the inside of the rim that keeps the tyre in the bead. Looked like a brilliant solution but I'm certain they'll be expensive.

I'd like to fit 17" steels to the hilux with the bfg at's, but cant seem to find one either.

'cause it seems hard to get extreme tyres to fit 17'' rims
so why did Mr.Toyota spec 17'' rims instead of 16'' on the 120 series?

BFG KM2's come in 17", as do the new AT KO2's.

Ps I think they went to 17" on alloys as the 16" alloy wont fit over the hub (steel might fit though as narrow wheel construction).
