Wing mirror retractor failure

I got a discount on the purchase of my LC5 120 due to the drivers side wing mirror retractor not working.
Rather than buy an entire mirror (as the garage that sold me the car were going to do), I was hoping to just replace the motor and / or mechanism.

*I am sure it is the motor / associated gearing as there is a slight "clicking" when I press the retract mirrors button*

Couple of issues however, first is that I cannot for the life of me figure out how to GET to the retractor motor.
secondly, I have no idea if the retractor motor & gears are available by themselves (i.e. without having to buy an entire mirror).

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

P.s on a slightly related note: I've looked for Haynes workshop manual for my car but they don't seem to sell one. Does anyone know if there are other workshop manuals available and if so, where I can buy them from please?

Thanks in advance!

Hi you can get haynes workshop manuals for 120s including the 1kdftv diesel engine, for colorado 1996 and 120 to 2009 on amazon for about £34.00 .

Hi also you can get electric folding mirrors in black or chrome also with or without built in indicator from about £70.00 at rough trax who specialise in toyota landcruisers.
Kind regards
Tony

Alternately troubleshoot the problem rather than relying on what the garage guessed it was. What if you pull the mirror apart or shell out for a new one and then find it's a broken wire to the door? So, with multimeter set to volts, compare what signals and permanent connections you get at each side inside the door or inside the mirror pod if you can get at the connections.

Hi Tony,
I've just looked again on Amazon and despite searching, nothing is coming up for 2006 120. The latest they seem to cater for is 1998
I checked again on the Haynes website too and they don't have anything for a land cruiser at all! I fired off an email to them to double check.

Thanks again for the help!

HI
Type in toyota landcruiser on amazon and all the landcruisers cum up the manual you need is the one that includes the 95 series and 120s it starts at 1996 to 2009 the 120s start at 2003 to 2009 which includes your car
my wife bought me mine about 3 years ago as a present. I had a look last night before I went to bed about 9pm as I had to be at work for 6 am so I didn't read your reply till now as I have just got home. As far as I know the mirrors on 120s motors are sealed in to keep damp out there are three motors in the mirror one for folding and one for up and down and one for left and right does your mirror adjust L and R and up and down if so its less likely a wiring fault so 70 quid for a new one seems a bargain apart from having to paint it. Unless you can live it not folding.
kind regards
Tony

Had a look just now on amazon it comes up as a prado that is the name of our car in other countries the haynes one is for Australia market were the 120s sold in big numbers our cars are just about the same car Lc5s are called grande over there. the add in amazon has no photo for some strange reason, maybe thats why you didn't notice it.
kind regards
Tony

Hi just looked on amazon under toyota prado and one with a photo for sale it has photo of the 95 on the front but it covers the 120s to 2009 selling for £21.00 it is the same manual as mine.
Tony

Clive,
that will be a great help if I can't replace the innards of the one I have. My mirrors are body coloured though (1E9), so I would get the black ones with indicators and have them painted. My current ones don't have indicators on them. Presumably I would take a feed for the indicators from the main fuse box?

Ahhh ok! Hence the confusion. I had a Landcruiser Prado TZ in Cyprus and it was quite different to the landcruiser I have now. I assumed they were more different than just re-badging. So our car is known as a prado 120 grande? Will get the manual now and thanks for all the help :)

Yeah, I updated my original post as I forgot to mention that the up/down & left/right adjustment is working and that the retractor motor *clicks* when I press the retractor button, so the wires/connections are good. What I suspect has happened is either the motor has a fault in it or that someone has knocked the mirror and its broken either the teeth off the retractor gear train or other mechanical parts. I will have a stab at repair (worth a shot) but will just replace both the mirrors if it isn't looking hopeful. I'm assuming that if I upgrade to the mirrors with indicators on them, I will have to do the wiring myself (i.e. the wiring is not already in place for such an upgrade?) and presumably the best place to take that from is the main fuse box?

I'm very keen to have them both folding as I've already had one expensive mirror replaced last year on my previous car thanks to someone clipping it in Marlborough high street. Think I saw a post about automatic folding actually which appeals to me. I'll search for it again.

Thanks again Tony. I owe you a couple of beers!

I'm no electrician and I don't know the wiring on the 120, but I would have thought if you can trace the correct L/R indicator points on the fuse box, that would be ideal.

Failing that, a wire from the closest indicator (presumably the repeater in the wing if you have one) would suffice.

I imagine them to be LED and thus a very low amp rating.

Hi you could try this with engine off and key out of egn fold both mirrors fully back in they should be no resistance put key in and start the car the mirrors should automatically unfold if mirror is out of sync it could work back in sync cost nothing to try.

My mirrors don't automatically fold / unfold. I have to press a button adjacent to the mirror adjustment pad (up/down/left/right arrows). I wish they did fold / unfold automatically :D

Hi what I mean is you fold them fully back with your hand with engine stopped and key out then put key in and start engine they should unfold by themselves automatically they do on mine. try it with the doors closed

Errr won't it damage them if I manually fold them in?

No, its designed to unlock rather than break.

There is a slight click and your heart sinks that you have broken it... but there is a small clip that unlocks and the mirror comes free. Free as in flapping free. When you turn ignition, it will engage the motor and deploy them again.

This is setup so as to not break the mounting or motors if you clip something.

Only thing is that i don't believe they lock back out in the open position by hand once it's free, need to have the motor engage and deploy it.

Try it on your good side first :)
