Ever since I bought my J95, the elec aerial has been dodgy. I have read the forum posts on this subject inside out and cannot find a thread that describes my problem. Hope someone can help??

Turn radio on and 1 maybe 2 seconds later the elec aerial moves upwards - sometimes an inch sometimes 18 inches. If I press the dash mounted "up" button, it extends another inch but no more. If I tap the "down" button quickly - just enough to get the aerial down a fraction, I can then push "up" and maybe get another inch sometimes two!

When I turn the radio off, it will start to retract. Sometimes most of the way, sometimes just a few inches. It is driving me mad! I have cleaned it, assisted by pulling (helps a little) but it continues to confound me. Yesterday, I went to an audio "specialist" who suggests there is a control module hidden somewhere under the dash but on phoning around was unable to tell me where. I reckon the aerial is connected to the radio with no secret little black boxes. Can anyone offer any help please? I would like to keep an elec aerial if poss as it is very handy when passing low lying triffids.

It’s posdible it’s slipping internally due to getting stuck on a slight kink in the aerial element. Other than that it could be a control module. No idea as the 80 one is as simple as anything.

If you have antenna up/down buttons, chances are the original radio has been changed for a newer one with outputs on the rear to power an auto antenna and the two feeds have been spliced together. I updated my radio but didnt use the antenna control output preferring to stick to the dash buttons only.
The sticking issue is more likely to be mechanical though as SC has suggested. Try pulling the radio out enough to disconnect the antenna power feed and use just the dash buttons.

Hi. There is a control module fitted. It is under the center console where it meets the bottom of the dash(mine is behind the cubby hole at the front of the consul). You pull this part out and you should see the control box on the left hand side and its dark green/black from memory. My truck is right hand drive so I can see it from the drivers seat. The up and down buttons are for off roading so you can lower the aerial and still listen to the radio if you want(mine only works in low range).
If you need a new mast for the aerial roughtrax do a replacement along with a video on their website on how to replace it.

There’s not that much difference in cost between an aerial element and the complete unit. I believe after sticking, the clutch mechanism gets a bit worn so that trouble can be experienced even after the element is replaced.

In the case of the Control box being the problem or whether it is physically sticking, if you have a listen with the bonnet up to the aerial motor for it operating while someone inside operates the buttons, you’ll hear if the aerial motor is operating while the element is sticking or if the motor is starting and stopping. If the latter then a multimeter set to Volts is needed to then see if the supply to the aerial motor is being interrupted or if the motor within the aerial is operating intermittently.

You checked inside the antenna ? Take top bolt of, and extract antenna by top button. If it stops pull out the rest of it. Should be a kind of tie-rib with teeth connected to the bottom. Maybe a piece of it is broken. They sell new antenna revision sets at rough trax. I inserted one a few years ago, works great again.

Thank you all for your replies. For some reason I was not notified that replies had been made and I "got distracted" by a certain someone who must always be obeyed....then, I forgot about this:(:(

Will get involved again over the weekend if I am not out playing.

Thanks once again.
UPDATE
Had a little play today:-
1. Motor for the aerial works well.

2. Aerial will reach maximum extension if you inch it up with the up/down buttons. By this, I mean when energising radio by turning on ignition, aerial rises - normally about 6" then if I quickly touch the down button, just enough to slightly move aerial down, I can then hit the up button for maybe another 3 or 4 inches of upness! And so on.

3. Took out central fascia that surrounds stereo and a.c controls. I have located the green/black module (thanks Steve H) but cannot quite work how to remove it??? HELP PLEASE!
It is beginning to look like I will also have to remove the central console around gear lever etc to get at it???

Have removed module now, just checked on ToyoDIY and these are £330 plus!

OK module removed and replacement from eBay fitted. Exactly the same problem. Begining to think that it may just be the radio itself - need to borrow one for a test! GRRR!
