Complete new rear brake set for 2001 100VX

Having just traded in my 2001 100VX, I will not be fitting a complete set of new rear brake spares consisting of: discs/drums, pads and handbrake shoes. Cost me over 100 quid, what offers please? No longer available.

    100 Series wanted

Not this 100 owner. I owned an 80 GXL in S.Africa and loved it. Did really tough trails with the guys and also did over-landing tours into Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique and Lesotho, for which the heavily modified 80 was ideal. But if you want a comfortable highway cruiser the 80 sucks in...

    100 Series wanted

I might be interested in selling my 2001 VX 4.7L with LPG conversion. In excellent mechanical order and bodywork very good for the age. Self serviced since I've owned it.

what is this on the silencer?

Omar thanks for the response and yes it is the petrol V8 4.7L. Is the centre weight supposed to be loosely floating around in the frame, as this is causing an exhaust rattle on mine?

what is this on the silencer?

What is the function of the bracket attached to the rear of the silencer? Currently the metal core is rattling around loosely and so I have wedged it.

    Swing out wheel hanger

I fitted the non Toyota equivalent to my 100 series after reading Jon Wildsmiths post. You can order the bottom mounting bracket from Toyota AFAIR 60 quid. For the top bracket I laid layers of fibre glass matting around the inside of the bodywork to add some stiffness. 2 Years on no problems so far.

    Jeremy Clarkson's 80 series

The way he treats vehicles would be enough of a warning for me never to touch anything he had owned or driven. It must make it worthless.

    Mud driving..the 80 is no light-footed pony!

Steve Soft tyres definitely help around 1.2 bar usually. If the mud is that treacly type then mud tyres don't help that much over AT's in my South African experience. When I did Baboons pass in Lesotho in my 80 GXL (EFI) some years ago all tyres were having problems, similarly on a Cruiser Cup...

Braking issue - is it my master cylinder?

Same symptons some years ago on my 80 GXL whilst on 2 day trail in RSA. The Cruiser whisperer on LCCSA recommended checking wheel bearings and sure enough play on drivers side, not extensive but after adjusting braking problem resolved.

    Mammoth Moth

There was a Black Mamba skin mounted on the wall of the social club I was a member of in New Germany (Natal/KZN, RSA) years ago that was considered an absolute monster at about 2.5/3 metres. So I cannot imagine one twice that size  Regarding moths I was astounded when in Bandung (West...

What do these controls in my Land Cruiser mean?

Vencel It is the accepted norm of this type of forum that one question leads to many answers and additional questions. That is the beauty and no one will consider it impolite. To try and answer your questions: 1 Yes some model 100's had both. Centre diff lockers are essential and standard in...

What do these controls in my Land Cruiser mean?

Yes you engage Low on the smaller gear stick then you have the full range of gears on the main stick. The 100's up to 2002 had 3 speed autobox with overdrive acting as the 4th gear. Later models had 5 speed box but not sure if that was also 4 + overdrive.
  17. Ken Brenton

What do these controls in my Land Cruiser mean?

Overdrive is just like an additional top gear, so no benefits except lowering engine revs and saving fuel. Traction control basically operates the ABS on a spinning wheel thus maintaining drive to the others. To get the best performance out of traction control off road it is recommended to use a...

What do these controls in my Land Cruiser mean?

Hi. Right to answer one by one: 2 locks in 2nd gear and wont allow changes up or down. Useful for towing heavy loads up long hills or when in low range in mud or deep sand where you need to keep the engine revs higher, not changing gear in the middle of an obstacle. Can also use when going down...

100 series upgrade question (should i do it or not)

It depends on what you consider as "more off road capable"? A 100 series with IFS (Independent front suspension) will never be as capable in the really rough stuff as the solid front axle. As a current standard trim 100VX 4.7 owner I can say that for cruising long distances it is so much more...

Retro fitting a genuine wheel carrier?

That is the one I bought for my 100 and they do line up well with the factory bracket, at the bottom anyway. Problems to date, the locking mechanism is a bit iffy and there is no way to latch it open. keeps running away from you on RH slopes and that breaks the plastic cover or banging into the...

Analogue Man You may find this solves your query: http://www.landcruiserclub.net/forums/showthread.php/34776-oem-style-wheel-carrier-install Although this is for a 100 series the fitting is very similar for an 80 I'm sure. I used this guide when fitting mine. The bottom bracket is Toyota OEM...

    ABS activating on slow stop

I agree with IRLGW, a loose wheel bearing can cause major brake issues on an 80 series. On my old 80 (non ABS) in SA the pedal occasionally went to the floor on the return trip from a weekend rock crawling. Luckily the "SA Cruiser Whisperer" advised me on LCCSA to check front wheel bearing play...

    winch bumper or just winch?

You can fit a winch into most bumpers but you still need to cut holes usually to take the carrier. You will also need a heavy duty mounting plate for the winch, normally bolted across the bottom of the main chassis members. Why do people go for steel bumpers, 3 main reasons: 1. Somewhere strong...

    Diff Oils Different

The LSD axle normally has a warning sticker on telling you only to use LSD oil. If the sticker is not there then jack up one rear wheel and in neutral try and turn it. If it is LSD very stiff to turn.

You need to be careful of direct wiring to the motor if it is anything like the locker motors. They require 7 wires, 5 to the actuator and 2 to the engaged indicator switch. There are limit switches to ensure the motor is cut off when the actuator is fully engaged. If you don't have them the...

Strange configuration. I hope somebody else can help out. The models I am familiar with had the option of 2 W High; 2 W low and 4 W low selected on the transfer box gear change. CDL Diagram HDJ81

The 80 came in many variants and if you have front hub locks your vehicle is part time 4 wheel drive. There is no centre diff hence no CDL on your model. Typically to engage 4 Wheel drive you must use the second gear change lever (small one) and engage Low range 4 wheel drive. This will engage...

    Alternative extra spare wheel.

On the bonnet hmmm not so sure, apart from the reduced visibility you have the problem of reinforcing the bonnet plus upgrading the lifting dampers. It will be a major schlep to lift into the middle of the bonnet without damaging bodywork.

    Alternative extra spare wheel.

A friend in SA used to carry a second spare tyre (without rim) on the roof when going into the bush. Thoughts on adding a locker.

Warren I fitted OEM lockers to my EFI 80 Oz model in SA years ago. You don't need to replace the housing but you do need to drill some additional holes and some other bodging. 80 series Differential lock wiring.

Creon The diff lock wiring is a little complex. There are 5 wires connected to the actuator and 2 wires connected to the indicator switch. You need either the original computer box or a DIY control circuit to operate the lockers as the voltage to the motor is reversed when the limit switches are...

    Solar panels

You need a regulator. The solar panels push out around 20V dependent on condition and amount of sunshine and you need to regulate that down to the charging voltage +/- 14 V for a leisure deep cycle battery. An 80W panel will therefore give you 4 Amps in ideal conditions, more likely 3 Amps on...

What's NOT to like about the Oztent?

Regarding the RV 4 & 5 sizes the only difference is the depth/length, the width is exactly the same, so you have a longer space under the low side. I fit two Oz stretcher/camp beds in the RV 4 without touching sides and plenty of space in between. The good thing with camp beds is you have plenty...

What's NOT to like about the Oztent?

As an owner of the RV 4 with all accessories the main downsides I have encountered: The length (2M) means it has to go on the RR which can be a pain to put up yourself. If you are a short a** like me you need to carry a stool to fit the extras The flysheet is an essential not an extra. It...

    Fuel tank mounting:

On the 80's there was an inspection plate beneath the rear seats and under the carpet that gave access to the top of the tank and the pump, don't know if they kept that in place for the 100's.

    Auxiliary fuel tank

Paul Some 80 variants came with a 55L sub tank fitted above the spare wheel. My 80 GXL (Oz spec) was one and I thought some of the VX's UK or Jap ones also. So if 55L is enough, you may be able to buy the OEM tank from a breakers yard. The plumbing is the issue. On the OEM the sub tank pumps...

ON a similar note (but of no use to decoding your springs), I recently bought OEM springs for my 2001 100 VX and they come with two options a pink and purple mark similar to the square on yours.
