Howdy from Texas!

I currently own a 2008 FJ Cruiser and have owned a 1995 Land Cruiser. I've been kicking around the idea of buying an FJ60 and have found one locally that has my interest. It's a 1985 FJ60, 6cyl, 4spd, A/C, power everything but windows, 190,000 miles, 1 owner Texas NO RUST vehicle that seems pretty nice other than the factory paint is weak. The asking price is around $8000. My plan is to restore it to nice condition and use it as a spare vehicle. The one thing that concerns me is the owner declared it needs main seals due to oil leakage. I had the head rebuilt in my '95 Land Cruiser and it wasn't terribly expensive. Can anyone tell me what I'm facing with replacing the main seals? I won't be doing the work myself.

Thanks from Texas!

Hi MX,

I think the guy means Mains seals. These are the seals at each end of the crankshaft and, as far as I'm aware, that means engine out and a complete strip down as, I think, the crank has to come out to get the new seals in. But I could be wrong. An engine specialist would know better (obviously) and would be able to give you a guide on costs. A full gasket set is around $500 although sor.com had them on sale (for HJ60) a while back. May be worth checking their site.

Cheers

The crank does not need to come out to replace the seals!

It does means getting gearbox / bell-housing off to get to the rear main seal, and getting the radiator / pulley etc off to get to the front seal.
Ain't to difficult, just quit a lot of work.
