hello to everyone on the forum, my job entails a fair bit of offroad driving to get to work sites i have previously owned 3 discovery 300tdi and they have done a good job unfortunatly it has become difficult to get a good one mainly through rust issues.so i have been looking at colorados the head issues with the early engines are a bit of a concern and the d4d are mostly too expensive, however there are a few older ones around the £5000 mark so which do you think would be more reliable a high milage d4d with history or the 1kzte ,i would also be using the vehicle to tow a caravan.

Hi Wicke good to see you've seen the light Colorado's with rust problems are extremely rare . I think your asking how long is a piece of string though regarding reliability . The 1KZTE auto needs a radiator change around the 100k mark but with that done i imagine your good for another 100k with regular servicing .

It might be an idea to update your location as the majority of members here are in the UK .

its the head issues that worry me about the early engine though i have owned a 3.0 surf that was fine in that respect, the extra power and economy of the d4d sounds good but i could only afford a higher mileage motor,

I think both have their merits, the D4D is a more modern engine insofar as it relies on sensors and ECU, has the intercooler which gives more power for towing. But the 1KZT, cared for, is easier to diagnose. Cooling wise if the rad, rad cap, hoses, coolant, stat, water pump and viscous fan are checked over then you shoould have no problems (I reckon this applies to both engines really). Fitting an aftermarket water temp gauge also gives piece of mind.

Both engines are good and will serve you well off road. It will inevitable come down to two things... Price and condition.

A high mileage motor doesn't mean it's in bad shape and a low mileage motor doesn't mean it's in good shape. Check service history and general condition of the car. For £5000 you will be able to find a nice D4D lump with a little bit of patience. At the same time you can spend a little less and then use some money on general maintenance if the truck needs it. If I was you I would hold out for the D4D lump, it's a better engine for towing with the additional horses and torque.

In addition, a good pro for a lot of people is the 1KZT-E engine will run on about anything (fuel wise) where as the D4D lump is a little bit more touchy!

thanks for the input folks i know that both have their plus sides, but having given this some thought i am leaning towards the earlier engine.one of the reasons that i did not want a td5 was because of the extra electrics so why would i do it with the landcruiser also igo offroad regularly and prefer the manual gearbox for this, which i think is easier to find in the earlier model

As said, it's a matter of mileage , price & history. The D4D has some more sensors, but very little electronic interference in reality. They have also proven very reliable engines in the Colorado. Mine's approaching 1/4 million and the engine has never been touched bar routine servicing. Either way, you will have a superbly reliable machine. Happy shopping
