Hi guys
does anyone knows if the 2ng gear problem on the manual gearbox is a factory
problem or cause due to heavy loading?
I think if I buy overhaul gearbox will that problem with the 2nd gear
disappear
cheers

It's a gearbox originally designed for a bus, and they come from the
factory with a stiff 2nd gear.
They vary a lot: mine (at 149k miles) is a bit awkward, especially in
cold weather, for the first mile or two, but after that it is fine; but
some others struggle to change gear at all when it is cold. Mine has
got no better or worse in the 7 years / 90k miles I've had the car, so I
think driving style (or more precisely gear changing style) probably
matters a lot. I'm very gentle with gearboxes generally, and happy to
double de-clutch when changing down if necessary.
On the basis that mine is perfectly acceptable, then a new or
reconditioned box is going to be as good or better. I remember reading
comments by Herb Peyerl, a very competent Canadian mechanic on the
80sCool list, that rebuilding his box still left 2nd gear as awkward,
but quite usable - it sounded pretty much like mine is now.
There are some other things you can do: the manual with my car says that
you should use 75w90 oil in the box, and Australian users have reported
that Castrol VMX-M can make a stiff box a lot better, so maybe you could
try that. However I imagine it's a lot colder that Australia where you
are so, on the basis that the difference between "cold" and "warm" makes
such a difference to my box, you could perhaps try xxwyy oil, where "xx"
is some number around 65, and "yy" around 80. I don't know what is
available in Norway, but in my experience a farm / tractor workshop is
the place to ask those sorts of questions since they will be used to
dealing with lots of different machines.
Finally, knowing your high opinion of Norwegian mechanics (!), there is
a workshop about 15 miles away from me here in Devon that is probably
the best place in the UK to get a gearbox rebuilt. I don't know if that
would interest you, but I have more information if you want it.

that explain it all:when it comes with a stiff 2nd gear from the factory
there isn't much to do about it after...
I have absolute the same problem as you and it never bothered me at
summer...only at cold winter days and as you some km and it's gone...or let
say from 10 tries makes 2-3 problems
It looks like I have to live with that ...
I'll try that oil you recommended when I change the timing belt and see how
it will behave then...
thanks for you answer:very kind of you
Lubo
PS:as for the guys in Devon rebuilding the gearboxes....well...don't
know...a guy in Belgium sells rebuild gearbox(0km) for around 1800euro incl.

Hi Christopher
I'm now back at work - so back on the e-mail and passing the days...
Re
Do they do auto gear boxes also? Mine is buggered.

Yes. It's the Exeter Gearbox Centre and their phone number is 01392
250225.
You could ask them about a swap to a manual, but I would have thought
that it would only be economic if you could find a donor vehicle that
has been in a crash from which to lift all the gubbins.

Following on from this recommendation I phoned Exeter Gearbox Centre to
arrange to have my gearbox reconditioned. All was well on the phone and I
arranged to leave my car there Sunday evening after the ELCO Weekend.
I received a phone call from them today saying they are not going to do any
work on my car because it is "an extreme, one off, modified competition
vehicle". I pointed out to them that is a road legal MOTed car with big
tyres, lifted suspension and a few dents. After much discussion, including
me offering to give up the warranty, they still refused to do any work on my
car.
Basically I have wasted a 300 mile round trip to use this company. If your
car is completely standard then I am sure they offer a good service,
however, if you have modified your car don't waste your time with them.
Sorry if this sounds like a bit of a rant, it's not, I'm just annoyed at
them for not metioning they don't work on modified cars on the phone.

Lubo,
Are you getting a continual judder when pulling off or is it a one off event when the slack is being taken up in the driveline or is it continuous for a few seconds?
If the splines and UJs on the prop shaft are worn and the diffs are getting tired, you will get some judder as the slack is taken up - this is very common on 80s.

Julian

Good point, I had the same problem on a car but why only second gear and
when cold? Might be worth checking if the effect is present in both high
and low? Could still be mounts as the loadings from standstill in first and
second are different.

it seems to be only at the beginning, otherwise functions very well...about a
year ago I sort of check up the car and got that tech report saying both
diffs were sort of worn out(slack), but that was due to the kilometers and
was nothing wrong actually.the same was said about the 4X4 gearbox so if I
wanted everything to be OK I had to pay A LOT of money,so I had to give up
for that time...also at that time I didn't noticed that kind of
juddering...it was another one-the one you get when taking suddenly you leg
off the gas pedal..
cheers

don't know anything about it-the single thing I'm good at is to drive the
car to Toyota and let them experience with it...and it is not so bad-already
changed the clutch 3 times and I paid for one ;-)))

You're a star: I too get the "grinding in reverse" noise when reversing
a trailer uphill in low range - lots of torque on the transmission - so
hopefully it's that.
I'll get them to check all these when it goes in for its pre-MOT service
next month.
Thanks

|
| There's an engine mount either side of the engine, between the engine
and
| the chassis rails. On mine the big block of rubber was no longer
bonded to
| the metal. When reversing up a slope there was a mild grinding noise
as
| the engine would tip up and the side of the sump hit the mounting,
drop
| back down, repeat. The noise wasn't all that loud and I only worked
out
| what was wrong when I happened to notice markings on the side of the
sump!
| (it had always made this noise). I put a jack under the sump with a
block
| of wood and jacked the engine up a little and sure enough one side had
a
| gap. It was a bit of a fiddle to get enough clearance to get the old
out
| and new in but not too bad.
|
| The gearbox mounting is between the gearbox and the gearbox
crossmember.
| Again on mine the rubber blocks were no longer bonded to the metal.
Put a
| jack under the gearbox and either raise the jack a little or undo the
8
| cross member chassis bolts 20mm or so each to lower the cross member.
The
| gearbox and cross member should be stuck to each other if your
mountings
| are ok. If the gearbox and cross member move appart then your mounting
is
| probably no longer bonded.
|
| I don't know if this is common but I thought it was worth a mention
| because it's the kind of thing I'd check.
