3rd world spec 80 series - where to buy?

3rd world spec 80 series - where to buy?Lubo
Come to think of it, it does seem that I could (quite possibly) import a
genuine spec'd 80 series (well, with all the bits that I want on a
bogstandard prep'd vehicle) from elsewhere in europe; I hadn't really
explored other countries apart from the usual suspects, and at the time that
I first became seriously interested in importing 4x4s, Big Jon (toy) said
there were always vehicles available under the UN Surplus bit, so I made a
few provisional enquires and there were indeed, vehicles available, but at
that time I hadn't the financially means to embark on a quest like this.
In readiness for the event (I like being prepared (!)) I obtained all the
necessary UK paperwork in advance of the troops attack, as it were. I now
have all the relevant UK paperwork to start making it happen, but I still
need to find out about EU paperwork and their rules and legislation side,
especially from countries outside the rich Western sphere of influence.
Do you have any leads? I mean, I know there are 4x4s available in most EU
countries, and to this end I will begin making enquiries, as I still do want
to import. Are the rules very different than here in th UK?

Thanks Lubo
I'll have a look in Germany - do you perhaps have any names of
dealers?
Left hand drive won't be a problem as we also drive on the
(wrong) side of the car here in Holland...
My thoughts for getting a right hand drive were:
1) I am playing with the idea of registering the car in the UK
to save on license fees/road tax (here in Holland around EUR 1200 per year)
2) If I move back to South Africa I can take the car with me -
it's illegal to import used left had drive cars to SA :-(

Subject: [ELCO] 3rd world spec 80 series - where to buy?
Hi all!
I'm starting to look at an 80 series as an upgrade from my
previous 75 series troopie. I'm a strong believer in the KISS (keep it
simple stupid) principle and therefore would prefer a vehicle with as few
fancy gadgets as possible (in my view the more gadgets/technology, the more
potential breakdowns that I can't fix myself in the bundus).
Basically what I am looking for is an oldish 80 series with
manual gearbox and an 1HZ 4.2 diesel (non-turbo) engine.
Does anyone on the forum know of a place in Europe/UK where
one could get this type of vehicle?
Were the 80 series ever sold in Europe/UK with the 1HZ
engines? It seems to me as if all the diesel 80 series I see advertised in
the UK/Europe are equipped with the TD engines.
If these vehicles are hard to come by, how difficult (and how
expensive) would it be to buy an old 80 series with a busted TD engine and
fit a 1HZ? Any places that can be recommended to do this type of
conversion?
Any advise and/or tips will be appreciated.
Regards
Paul

Paul, Renate, Lubo and others..
Firstly, please trim your replys - only include the relevant bits of
the message that you are replying to NOT the whole message (and several
messages before) it makes a real mess of the Digest mode.
Also another reminder to please avoid using HTML formatting in your
posts - it is a complete waste of bandwidth and also makes a complete
mess of the digest which is driving people away.

I've no idea of that stuff-I went to Germany, saw the car, paid for it
and the dealer ordered all the necessary papers included 'MOT' 'couse
you can't import car in Norway without
valid 'MOT'.ofcourse I had to pay for all that and it was not right
but nothing was right at all with that purchase :-((((
be careful!!!! a lot of sharks out there ready to 'eat you up'

Yeah it does worry me a bit, thankyou for your warning - importing 4x4s into
the uk is an absolute minefield. I'm aware there are loads of sharks out
there - no-one's pulled one over me yet, but there is always a first time -
so I guess the only sharks that I need to fear are those in the car
trade....
Actually, I might have some good sources in europe - there's a mate of mine
who is 'in the trade' as it were who might be able to point me into yet
another direction (that might just help to save my skin one day) - I think I
might ask his advice, he has contacts for the importation of 4x4s into the
UK; he's an 'insider' but a usefull ally - I'll get on the blower (when I
find his number or his current email...) ASAP
Cheers for that

Skype is actually some software plus a telephone, or mike + headset, that plugs into the USB port on your computer. Calls between skype members are "free", anywhere in the world, and they are just that: (spoken) talk, not (written) "chat".

I've put "free" in quotes because you need a broadband connection, which has to be paid for one way or another. But making a call to another skype member will not cost you anything extra.

It was bought by Ebay a few months back, so while the technology may or may not be dodgy (and apparently the call quality can be poor at times) it is a "proper" setup, not some fly-by-night internet scam. Quite how it will pan out in the future in the face of competing "Voice over Internet" (VOIP) services, and also the unhappiness of the main telecoms carriers realising that they are losing paid-for telephone traffic, remains to be seen. There has been talk in the USA of some ISPs throttling or even banning VOIP traffic.

Personally I haven't bothered: I have a "=A35 per month for unlimited UK landline calls" deal from my ISP which is good enough for me; and we are so far from the exchange that my broadband connection only delivers about 800kBits/s. It could be worth it if you make a lot of international calls to people with computers though.

Christopher Bell

(Sorry Julian, no TLC content. But at least I've converted it to plain ascii text.)
